We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Hilburn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, what are you inspired by?
I am inspired by my clients and their unique stories! As a designer my goal is to create spaces that truly reflect my clients and all the wonderful things that make them & their family unique. My inspiration is always found in my client! My hope is for their home to be an expression of who they are, so the client is always the main character of the story I tell. Creatively I’m also inspired by the world around me both in nature and in travel. My camera roll has become a catalog of inspiration: unique construction elements, art, textiles and patterns that I’ve come across. I’m always stopping to snap a photo of a “wow” moment that I want to refer back to creatively. And sometimes those wow moments are tile patterns, cabinetry details or furniture legs, but I guess the designer never stops designing! In my personal life I’m inspired by my son Ellis and my husband Josh. My family inspires absolutely everything I do and every day I hope to make them proud both as a hardworking business owner and a mother!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Katie Hilburn Interiors is a full-service residential interior design studio based here in Houston! We work with clients locally and remotely all over the country. What started as my passion for all things design and remodel has turned into a team of three who has served over 45 clients! We focus on warm, cozy, comfortable design that marries aesthetic and function. We assist our clients with projects large and small, from single room furnishing to whole-home remodel, new builds, and additions. My passion is bringing approachable, functional design to every home because I believe beautiful, expressive design is for everyone. I believe your home should be a reflection of you and what makes you and your family unique. We are proud of our commitment to our clients, our attention to detail, and our unique perspective on the design industry! Design work is the absolute most fun and truly my passion, but little prepared me for becoming a business owner during a pandemic! I have learned SO much in my time in business- from taxes to marketing, website design to vendor relations and furniture design- it has been such a whirlwind and I absolutely love it. I have learned so much about the power of hard work, kindness, and flexibility and I’m so proud of how far I’ve come and where we’re headed. I want our clients (and future clients!) to know that 100% of our effort, work, and time goes toward creating the absolute best product for you. I am constantly evolving, growing and learning to not only bring you the best in design, but the best experience in getting there! My hope is that our client experience is one that makes you feel valued, seen and cared for. I am so grateful to my clients who have trusted me along the way and to our new clients, we can’t wait to meet you!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you’re visiting Houston it’s a guarantee we are going to eat and then eat more. If you know me, you know my #1 spot is Eight Row Flint in the Heights! It’s such a vibe and my go to is a Ranchwater (or two) with a side of queso. We would also absolutely visit Uchi in Montrose- it is so fun to sit at the bar and watch the incredible sushi chefs at work. Give me allll the courses of nigiri and I am happy! We would absolutely explore small businesses in town- I love strolling 19th Street in the Heights! With a toddler in tow, our weekends are full exploring parks and outdoor spaces. We would definitely explore green spaces- and ideally it would be October with great weather- maybe a picnic at Memorial Glades, a trip to Donovan Park (or as my son calls it, the “Choo Choo park”) or a long walk in the Heights looking at historic homes. Houston is such an incredible city full of culture and diversity that is worthy of appreciation!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband Josh absolutely deserves a shoutout!! He has been my number one supporter, cheerleader and coach in my journey as a business owner and I owe so much of my success to him. I started my business in the middle of a pandemic as a mom to a one year old and Josh did not once doubt me or waver in his support. His encouragement has been so powerful! Secondly, my TEAM! At the one year mark of owning my business I was so fortunate to bring on two incredible team members, Sara & Kaitlin. They have been such amazing additions to the KHI team and I am so grateful to them for their positive energy and hard work!
