We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaydo Montgomery and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaydo, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
One of the main reasons I wanted to start my own business is because I don’t plan on being a self taught cosmetologist forever. I want to drop products and be a head to toe stylist for celebrities. I always thought that I’d been deal with local people for so long that it was time to expand my brand and make Kaynime Beauty global.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets my art away from others it the fact that I never want it to be regular. I always try to go for bright colors when I freestyle on my wigs and I always encourage my clients to not be scared of some color as well. Getting to where I am today took a lot of money. The better your products the better your work. Along with practicing and watching videos of other people doing makeup. One of the biggest challenges I faced was people I know getting mad because I wouldn’t give them discounts or do things for free. Along the way, I’ve learned that I can’t play favoritism with anyone may it be a friend or family member. That’s bad business all the way around. But lastly, I want the world to know that I came up with the idea of doing this all on my own. It was all because I didn’t have eyebrows in middles school and started to draw them on. I started doing the girls in school eyebrows and it went on from there

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One place I would take them is definitely downtown Chicago because that’s my favorite place to go. It’s literally some of everything to do downtown there from eating to partying, shopping, anything you can name. I’d also probably take them around the gang to a studio session or a black party. My crowd consists of party hosts, rappers, models, you name it. We know how to turn up.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d just wanna give a big shout to my friends Tyra and Antonio. They really give me the pep talks I need to keep going.
