We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Lassetter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Growing up I always had the thought that I’d do really well in school, graduate, go to college, graduate from there, & then work my way up the corporate ladder at some 9-5 job & then that would be my every day life. At one point I was fine with that, but as time went on my depression was getting worse & I was tired of living paycheck to paycheck at some job that didn’t care about ME. At each job I had, I was always doing MORE than what they wanted to pay me for. One day I thought, “if these dummies can run a business then so can I” & I never looked back. It was tough getting things set up, taking the risks, & having the fear of failure but I knew it would all be worth it. I never had a thought of running my own business & being a real CEO, but here I am & now I couldn’t imagine it any other way!

What should our readers know about your business?
I named my Social Media Agency “Free Spirit Virtual Solutions” because I believe in doing things my own way, not in the way that everyone else tells you to. Especially when it comes to business, there isn’t a “one-size-fits-all”. I had plenty of people to tell me “if you want to achieve success, then you must do this” & it just never worked for me. The moment I decided to do things the way I wanted & conduct business in a way that felt best for me, that’s when my business took off. I think many people believe you must have tons of degrees & certifications to run a business but that’s not true at all. Things haven’t always felt easy with my business, but I overcome that fear by reminding myself that my business literally cannot fail unless I give up. And if I give up, then that means I have to go back to working for someone else’s dreams – not mine. And that is just not an option in my book anymore. I’ve learned that there will always be people out there that won’t support you or think what you’re doing is dumb, but you can’t give your energy to those people. Focusing on the people who do love & support your dreams will work wonders. I want people to know that there IS a way to make really great money while also doing what you love most every single day. You don’t have to pick & choose, you really can have the best of both worlds. Don’t let the fear of failure hold you back. Take the risk & make the jump because it could be the best decision of your life!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my all-time FAVORITE spots in the city is Taste of Texas. I’m obsessed with the food, the ambiance, & the people who work there are so pleasant to be around. If you’re visiting or live in the area, then Taste of Texas is an absolute must-try. Beware that it is pricey, but it’s WORTH IT. Then I’d say head to Westheimer to dabble in some thrifting – preferably at the Leopard Lounge! Westheimer has tons of shops & local businesses to check out. I love seeing a good movie, so I’d also recommend visiting the Showboat Drive-in! It’s a bit of a drive, but also so worth it. Another favorite of mine is going to the Houston Improv Comedy Club! I always leave the club with a headache because I was laughing too much haha.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d say my family and my loving boyfriend have been the backbone of it all. My family seemed a little worried when I decided to pursue this venture, & I understand why they would be, but they still supported me & believed I could do it. There were plenty of times that I wanted to give up but my boyfriend has been there to reassure me every day. Luckily with my career, I’m able to meet so many amazing people around the world through the internet who’ve been through similar situations & they also have played a key role in my success.
