We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Straube and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Running my own business has taught me the power of self. The power to be resilient and open to change. It has taught me that well spent hours of time spent on a project can yield beautiful results. My business also saved me. Although I built this business to help others, it took me some time to realize that it was saving me too. I had previously struggled with very toxic relationships and substance abuse. One day i walked away from all of that and started completely over. I never imagined that it would turn into what it has, but I owe a ton of love for being able to stay strong and never give up!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Power Fit Meals is a local, fully customizable meal prep & nutrition service. You can order directly from our menu, send us your macros for custom meals, or work with one of us to get a plan in place. Power Fit Eats are the in store retail shops for you to shop and take home. They carry a variety of juices, protein desserts, and balanced meals. Additionally, we have another extension called Pretty Baked Sweets Events & More that offers a variety of services including catering, custom desserts, event planning, decor, and more.
I am incredibly proud of the growth we have had despite all of things that have come our way, especially economically. This last year alone with hurricanes and elections was tough! I didnt get to where I am with ease. I have put in countless hours, tears, etc to build this. When I first started Power Fit in 2018 I had just started to rebuild my entire life. My previous relationship left me broken from abuse, addicted, broke, and with nothing- I mean NOTHING, not even clothes on my back. Mid 2017 I got a job making $10 an hour at a machine shop and when Hurricane Harvey came to Houston I started cooking for the Cajun Navy and other rescue teams just to try and keep people that had been working hard fed. After that I was getting back into my marketing career and I was working with a local gym that was preparing to open. Their plans fell through with the food company that they had selected so I stepped in to try and help. From that, a personal trainer reached out to me to see if I had ever done meal prep work for the competitive industry. I took on the challenge and it developed into a full time job within weeks. I spent the first 2 years only working in that particular part of the industry and then Covid came along. I switched gears over into lifestyle change clients and kept things going. It has been really rewarding to help others make healthy changes to lead healthier lives!
I have learned that there are still snakes in the grass no matter what! No matter what I have done to rebuild there will always be those waiting for the breakdown.
I live a very humble life now, one full of grace, love, and understanding!
My message to others- just be and things will be okay. Promise. I was barely able to see the light in the next day at one point. And some days are still so incredibly hard and stressful- but stay consistent. If something is not working for you, take a new path. Second piece of advise, protect your peace!
For every person who orders, I appreciate you supporting. Without you, Power Fit cant grow. We have a new menu, new labels, and new offerings coming next year we cant wait to share with you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start by stopping by Mamajuanas! The food and atmosphere are wonderful. Around that area are lots of fun restaurants and museums. We could also go to The Post in Houston, tons of cool vibes!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would dedicate this first to my family. My husband has believed in me since day one. My children have supported my long hours and efforts to provide for our family. I am certain that seeing me work as hard as I have has lessons in it for them too. My Grandmother (who goes by Cookie)- thank you for spending so much time with me in the kitchen as a kid! i will forever cherish those memories and things that I learned from you. I would also like to thank everyone that I work with. I started out with a tiny team of two and in 6 years we have over 50 team members. I would like to thank my management team for pouring themselves into this and for believing in me! Lastly, I would thank my business partner, Lindsay, from Pretty Baked Sweets. We have poured so many hours into our dreams!
