We had the good fortune of connecting with Keisha Bussey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keisha, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m a true “Valley Girl”, originally a native born and raised in Harlingen, Texas. I been dancing since I was in my mother’s womb. “Dancing feet”. My upbringing impacted me who I am today is when, I discovered my love for dance at the Boys & Girls Club as a young girl. I later moved to Alexandria, Louisiana while at Bolton High School Dance Drill Team and continued to have a love for dance. My love for dance continues to grow daily as I teach elementary dance.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Absolutely! This journey as a new dance company Instructor, Author, Executive Director & Owner has been a bit challenging because there is a lot of requirements and decision making I have to make daily in order for it to run smooth. When you are doing this by yourself you want to make sure you have it all together, but with volunteers and mentors they have guided me through this. Everyone speaks highly of my passion for teaching the students and dancers. They see the passion I have for them and the love for dance. I have always had a passion for dance. When I was a little girl I spent most of my time at the Boys & Girls Club after school programs. I discovered the love of dance and love it! I have been professional trained at different dance studios and colleges. My love for dance continues to grow daily as a dance educator for 20 years. I believe in implementing dance books into dance curriculum while teaching. As a little girl, I always had a love for books. My mother taught me to enhance my imagination while reading. I give credits to early reading with my mother for an increase in my reading fluency as I became a more effective reader throughout school. Fierce6 Elite Dance started in summer of July of 2017. I had a vision of 12 girls to start this dance journey with. I wanted to teach dancers who were experience dance or never danced before to have a “Chance to Dance”. All of my students who have started to dance with me I have watched them grow to be beautiful dancers. I have had the pleasure of taking my dancers to dance competitions in the Houston areas. We have grown into a Fierce6 Elite Dance Company throughout the years. Then I decided to take it a little further with writing a children’s book. I have always wanted to write a children’s book because I have a passion for dance and writing. I’m a visionary person, so I wanted lots of illustrations for my children’s book. I started writing years ago, brainstorming on ideas I could write in my journal into creating my manuscript. My inspiration came from my third-grade reading teacher and also my High School AP teachers who pushed me to read, use journals, and write at the beginning of class time while listening to music. My journey as a writer was a long process because I started with a chapter book then decided I wanted to change it to a children’s book. There were a few life-changing things that came up, so the process was longer than I expected. I’m happy for the learning experience of becoming an author. Chance to Dance tells the story of Keisha, a fierce, sassy, and full of energy dancer who is excited about learning how to dance. This book allows children to “Dream Big,” follow their hearts desires, believe in themselves, have a vision, and pursue it! Never Miss a Chance to Dance and Read!
