We had the good fortune of connecting with Keisha White and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keisha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Well, I knew that working a 9-5 fulfilling someone else’s dream wasn’t for me. I always felt like I was a better leader and team player than most of my managers, no matter the job. Once I had my daughter in December of 2016, I went on a 3 month maternity leave. That got me to thinking about what life would be like if I owned my own business. I thought about how much more time I’d be able to spend with my little one, without being on someone else’s schedule. Fast forward to July of 2017, I quit my job working for a Nissan Dealership in Houston, Tx. I not only went back to school, but I also started a small business. Seeing the amount of love and support that I’ve gotten over the years is what pushed me to continue to grow my business and customer base. All I ever wanted was to be financially free, and provide any and everything for my daughter and I. Growing up, my mom always worked two jobs in order to take care of me and my three siblings. Even with those two jobs it’s was still hard making ends meet. I know what it feels like to struggle, and I know that with my current business, I’ll never struggle again.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The name of my business is Klozet Kustomz. I started off making custom gift baskets. Then, I decided to venture off into custom t-shirts for all occasions and I would add those to the gift baskets for an even higher profit. Once I saw how the shirts were selling I said, “what the heck?” I want to start a boutique and try selling clothes. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. So far things have actually been easy for me, but that does not mean that there isn’t a lot of work involved. Especially behind the scenes. What sets me apart from others is that I remain myself, all while keeping it professional. I love to engage with my customers, make them laugh, and feel appreciated. I don’t make it hard to get in contact with me for assistance. I am the face of my brand and I want it to stay that way. I’ve now grown from selling just clothes, to shoes, handbags, hats, and accessories. All in less than two years. I even have a physical store now and that took me just a year of being in business. I want the world to know that one day Klozet Kustomz will be just as big as Fashion Nova, if not bigger.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely grab some of the best seafood in Houston from Lotus Seafood. We would do brunch at Phil n Derek’s, which is an awesome black owned restaurant. Dinner would have to be at taste bar and kitchen. They have the best Lamb Chops in town! We could go to discovery green or Kemah Boardwalk for some fresh air and outdoors fun. Oh, and they’d definitely have to come with me to work one of my events at the Buffalo Soldiers Museum hosted by blck market. I vend there twice a month. Every first Friday from 6-10pm, and every second Saturday from 1-5pm. We could watch a movie at a studio movie grill, or go and relax by my neighborhood pool. The adventures are endless with me.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, shoutout to GOD! Without him and the power of prayer none of this would even be. I would like to say that I am lucky enough to have a very strong support system. The wild part about it is that it’s not only from family and friends, but also COMPLETE STRANGERS! The amount of love that people show my business never goes unnoticed. My daughter’s dad gives great advice, my mom supports me no matter what, and a high school friend of mine supports me in any and everything that I have ever done. When I mention new ideas to him, he listens and implements additional tips and strategies.
