We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Simon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I have to constantly work to achieve a healthy work/life balance. When I first was licensed I had a great work/life balance. However, as the company continued to grow, that became more difficult. I recently hired a business coach that helped me with my company structure to help provide a better balance. I have hired a few admins and have learned the importance of delegating. I am actively still working to achieve a healthier work/life balance!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
When I first decided to open my brokerage, it was not my goal to have a company or agents that work for me; I did it for myself. After I started the company multiple friends of mine that were agents wanted to move their licenses over to my company. I did not take on agents at first because I wanted to make sure that I was ready. When I started to accept agents it was important to me to provide a collaborative workspace where agents could create their own brands, help each other, and also have full time support with competitive splits. We grew very organically and slowly, mainly by word of mouth from other agents, lenders, and escrow officers. We have had our growing pains, like many companies. Originally, the company was virtual and all our agents worked from home. As we found that more agents needed an office space to work out of, or as more agents needed more personalized help, we knew we would need to find an office. We opened our brick and mortar in 2016 and I have had to learn how to set up the office to offer a good mix of productivity and social interaction. We were also able to move into a second office space this year to provide more space for agents to work, as well as a conference room for client meetings. At KSP we strive to hire agents that fit the company’s culture with a focus on charity and commitment to growing our brand. We partner with many non-profits including B.E.A.R (Be A Resource for CPS Kids), the Houston Food Bank, Love And Rescue, and the Houston Area Parkinson Society. Giving back to the community we serve is very important to our agents.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We also own a very local, neighborhood bar, the R Bar – Houston, with our good friends Mark and Kelly, so we always bring folks over for Steak Night, Trivia Night, or just for a low-key hang. We love local restaurants such as Alma Latina, Artisan’s, and Harold’s in the Heights. For a relaxing day our favorite is the Trellis-Spa at the Houstonian where we try to do an office retreat annually.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Erin Dominy, is my Team Lead and coach. She is a fantastic agent and a great team member. She is quick to help out any of our agents and is constantly working to help our agents grow their businesses and become successful agents.
