We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsey Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelsey, how do you think about risk?
Taking a risk is essential to succeed..whether it’s in your career or just life in general. We get so comfortable in our norm and play it safe but you don’t truly grow or become successful until you break past that point and take a risk. Moving 12 hours away to Houston..going to culinary school…starting my own business..these are all risks that I took to pursue my dreams and although they were scary I know they were necessary in order for me to be where I am today.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing I love most about the food industry is how diverse it is. It can be challenging at times because it’s very competitive but it’s also one of the most unique fields out there. There could be hundreds of bakers in one area but they all bring their own unique twist to their craft. That’s what makes this so special…that even though many other people do what I do, there’s only one me. What started off as something therapeutic or a hobby for me turned into a creative outlet that I’ve been fortunate enough to make a career out of. It’s not always easy..some days I just want to give up..but I know I’m only going to continue to grow through my hardships. A lesson I’ve learned along the way is that it’s okay to fail. You’re not always going to get it right on the first try but learning from your mistakes is just as important..it’s all apart of growth and being able to evolve and grow in this industry is key.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
You can’t go wrong with good drinks and a chill atmosphere so somewhere with a good patio where you can hangout and socialize is always a plus. I love a good brunch or happy hour so some of my favorites are State Fare, Present Company or Graces. All have good food, cool atmospheres and drinks worth what you pay for. If you’re looking for a chill night out you can’t go wrong with pizza! One of my favorites is Luigi’s and its located right next to Axelrad Beer Garden so you can get your pizza and hangout at their cool outside seating area where there’s games and usually a live band. Sunday funday is a must and some places I’ve really enjoyed going to are Turkey Leg Hut, The Breakfast Klub or 5015…if you love good food, music and atmosphere you can’t go wrong with any of these. One thing that I love most about this city is there’s always something going on..something new to experience. Whether you’re in the mood for a game, museum, or activity in the park there’s always something fun to do.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d have to give a shoutout to my sister. It may sound cliche, but I really don’t know where I would be without her. There were many times where I wanted to give up and didn’t think I could ever turn my passion into a career but she’s been there for me every step of the way. She’s my rock and I owe so much of my success to her.
