We had the good fortune of connecting with Kesha Sonny and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kesha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was that I needed to be more available to raise my kids. I was tired of being/feeling stuck working for employers that didn’t care about me having a work/life balance. I am currently 24 and have three littles. My oldest son is 5, my middle daughter is 4, and my youngest is 11 months. Over time, I have learned that I will always have the chance to make money, but I only have one chance to raise my kids successfully.
I want to be able to support them as they grow, while still being able to work my own schedule.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me part from others is the fact that there is only one Kesha Sonny out there. The same way how there are so many different water brands on the shelf, but you just pick your favorite one every time. I had to learn that even though there may be other people in the world doing brows as well, nobody has my exact personality, my style, my outlook on life, or even how I may handle client once they sit with me. Staying humble, patient, and focused helped get me to where I am today, and thankfully it was easy because it was always a part of my persona even before I started Brow’d Babe.
If there’s anything that I would love for the world to know about me, my brand, and my story is that patience is a virtue and to always stay true to yourself. Do not change yourself to conform to society because there’s no one else out there exactly like you, no matter how hard they can try. Take the leap of faith and stay consistent. Success won’t land on your lap unless you work for it. Even though some struggles may seem as if they can’t be overcome, “if there is a will, there is a way”.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being that I haven’t had the chance to truly explore Houston yet, I wouldn’t know much places to explore yet. Sooo, if anyone would like to be friends and take me out to tour Houston, I’m down! Being that I was born and raised on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands, the best time ever would consist of going to the beach, bar hopping, eating out at local restaurants, partaking in the local native festivities, and simply hanging with friends and family. I’m a pretty laid back person, so I really don’t need much to have a good time.
In Houston though, I’d love to spend time at the zoo, going restaurant hopping, maybe wine tasting, and explore local exhibits/museums. I’ve heard that there’s a beautiful view in Galveston and I can’t wait to experience it someday!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to my mother, my husband, my kids, and my best friend. They have all pushed me to better myself to be the ideal role model, partner, and daughter. They have seen every tear and heard every self-doubting conversation, but still knew how to help me keep my head up to continue bettering myself.
