We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Dong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always aspired to be an entrepreneur since I was young. I have started my entreprenal career by opening a business in the insurance and tax field, which is currently active to this date. Since then, I had expanded my field to opening a construction company. My friends and I are big “foodies” as we spend many days together exploring different diverse cultures and food. After eating at various establishments, I decided to diversify my portfolio and dab into the service industry.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Nothing comes easy in life. As the saying goes, “good employees are hard to find”, especially in the service industry which carries a high turnover rate. I have been blessed with great employees, especially managers, that have allowed me to delegate important duties so that I may concentrate on my diverse portfolio of businesses. With Thaicoon, I had construction done prior to covid 19 shutting everything down, which delayed my opening. Even with this worldwide pandemic, my faithful employees remained with me, which I am truly appreciative. I honestly believe that a business’s success relies mainly on the capabilities of their employees. Therefore, I will continue to nurture my employees growth as the business grows so that we may all grow successfully together.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a tough question as Houston is so huge and diverse with so many cultures and things to do. As with many cities around the country, a Chinatown exists in some capacity. As Houston’s Chinatown is extensive to a certain point compared to others around the country, I would start there. I can name a list of restaurants from there, however, it would go on for days if I did as there are just too many. In short, I would take them to eat crawfish, seafood, and dim sum for the Chinatown area. You can’t come to Texas without having bbq, can you? For that reason, I would take them to stand in line with me to Corkscrew in Old Town Springs to show that Houston is more than just Houston. As for nightlife, I would take them to midtown and the Heights to provide them with some of the best sushi they have ever eaten. And finally, as the saying goes, “there is no place like home”. I have alot of friends who are chefs that I spend time with on a weekly basis. We would comfortably eat at home while socializing and have a finally with….karaoke!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my friends and family who are always supportive of me in my endeavors. Like any other individuals, ideas may clash from time to time. However, it is the uniqueness of every idea that creates debates, followed by success after trial and errors.
