We had the good fortune of connecting with Merinda Watkins-Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Merinda, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I am naturally risk adverse. But, I also understand that a business must take risks to grow and thrive. I have found a very calculated approach to risk works best for me. We, (My husband, Reginald Martin, and I), always strive to minimize risk by limiting the variables we can’t control. We purchased our kitchen so the drastic rent fluctuations were no longer applicable. We limit our exposure to unpaid debts by requiring payments in advance. We also create hard thresholds for new ventures. If we haven’t made a new endeavor profitable in six months, we already have a preplanned exit strategy.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We own Lemond Kitchen, a full service catering company that serves the Greater Houston area. Our company provides delicious chef inspired gourmet meals with impeccable service. We also have a line of drozen Creole products at both Bering’s Hardware locations. We are known for our delicious Louisiana bread pudding with Bourbon sauce. We treat every event as if our reputation depends on it. We truly believe that great food is only the beginning to a great event.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a native Houstonian. So, I would love to show my friends some hidden gems in Houston . We would visit the Orange Show and bring a great BBQ lunch from Gatlin’s BBQ or Burn’s BBQ. The next day we would visit the MFAH and explore the amazing art from different cultures followed by lunch at Sweet Paris. I would definitely include trips to NASA, the Rodeo if applicable, the Houston Zoo, and Discovery Green.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely, my husband and Exec Chef Reginald Martin. There would be no company without his amazing food and strong skills and our amazing team. Our staff make the hard work fun and exciting. Finally, our amazing clients who have been with us for years. You are the best.
