We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Kendrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Self-Sustainability. As millennials, we have seen how volatile and unforgiving corporate life can be to our parents’ generation. I grew up in Houston in the 90’s and remember the Enron crisis all too well – specifically, I remember multiple children getting picked up early from school by crying parents who had just lost everything. From early on, I never wanted mine or my family’s livelihood tied unconditionally to a company that could upend our well being on a whim. While I’m fortunate and grateful to have had great experiences working at companies in the past and currently at the Houston Zoo, being able to call the shots and be self-sufficient with Kendrick Media is something I value so much.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started Kendrick Media to create the highest quality videos for our clients in my hometown of Houston, Texas. After graduating college, it was very clear to me that I wanted to work and start my professional life in Houston, specifically to take part in the developing entrepreneurial energy of the city at the time. I was hired for my first video production role at the Houston Ballet right after graduation, which was an amazing opportunity to work on videos detailing the creation of some of the highest art in the country. From there, I went through a rigorous interview process at Houston Grand Opera (HGO) and was hired as their first in-house video producer. My first day was the day Hurricane Harvey hit, which consequently destroyed HGO’s home, the Wortham Theater, so being able to document the recovery efforts of the organization and the city was the honor of a lifetime. I spent the next few years filming some of the biggest names in opera, creating commercial videos for several world premieres that I am extremely proud of to this day. I learned a lot about operating in a complex organization with multiple departments’ deadlines and legal obligations dictating a project simultaneously. After realizing that it was time to move on after 3 years at HGO, an opportunity came up at the Houston Zoo, which really was a dream job for me. I have since had the opportunity to film wildlife in many places – most recently, the Galápagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador! Over COVID-19, we saw many people close to us lose their livelihood which really reinstated my need to have multiple irons in the fire to protect my family. My partner, Morgan, and I realized the necessity of starting our own video production company, one where we could bring our expertise in creating video to people wanting to capture a special day, event, conference, or to help other small businesses lacking representation online or in advertising. There have been many lessons learned along the way, but the most pressing lesson we’ve learned is to not wait for things to come to you. There is too much talented competition waiting to take your place. We are a Houston-centric video company that is proud to be able to create and tell your stories in this beautiful city.
