We had the good fortune of connecting with KiKi Maroon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi KiKi, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I am a standup comedian, podcaster, showgirl, youtuber, and special events and circus producer. I hated the question “what do you do?” because I didn’t have a concise answer! Then one day at a seminar, we were told to craft a one sentence answer to that question, with the caveat that it would have to lead to follow up questions (to encourage conversations with potential clients). This forced me to look at what I do from an outsiders perspective, which finally gave me the answer- “I help people forget about their problems.” Whether for 10 minutes doing standup comedy or 2 hours at a live event or 1 minute of an online sketch, I want to give people a moment of joy. I don’t have 6 different businesses, I have one. I sell a temporary escape. Realizing this not only gave me the answer to that dreaded question, but it became my North Star. If something doesn’t align with this, I don’t do it. No debate, no questioning myself; it helps me bring joy or it doesn’t. It’s made my decision making process fast and easy, which has led to exponential growth.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In the before times, I had a monthly residency at House of Blues Houston and House of Blues Dallas. I was the host and star of a Vegas-style variety show called KiKi Maroon’s Burly Q Lounge. While Covid put that on a temporary hiatus, I have been using this time to build an even bigger show to take to even more cities. Once venues open up again, I plan on taking a full scale circus show around the country! I hate having to wait, but am having fun sharing all the behind the scenes planning, costuming, and prop making on my Instagram and Youtube channels.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I LOVE when friends visit Houston. There are so many places to go, mostly food related. Hahaha. I always stop by Discovery Green to check out the latest installation, taking a pho break in midtown. Oysters at State of Grace, shopping on 19th street, coffee at Uncle Beans, and a show at Warehouse Live or House of Blues.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Paige Mann of House of Blues Houston is the best. The entertainment industry can feel like a man’s world, so I am forever grateful to have a badass woman to look up to. She’s been there for me in my darkest times and next to me during my biggest accomplishments. She is the GOAT.
