We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashly Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashly, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My favorite quote is “Life isn’t about finding yourself, life is about creating yourself.” This quote means a lot to me because it changed my perspective on life in general. I was always told, you need to find yourself, and I never understood. What I like about it, is that it made me realize that I create my life, my destiny, my dreams, and much more.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a freelance makeup and hair artist located in Houston. I travel frequently for work around the area, and prior to the pandemic, outside of the city as well. I’ve been in the industry for about 10 years now and a licensed cosmetologist for the last 4 years! What sets me apart from others, is my ability to connect with my clients and to go far and beyond what is expected of me. I feel like building those personal relationships are important and help me with future jobs. I am most proud of how far I’ve come in the last 10 years. I went from working on photo shoots, to behind the chair, to on film sets. I got where I am today professionally by working hard and putting in the time for others. It definitely wasn’t easy. I overcame some of those challenges by staying positive and working through the challenges. I learned many lessons in the business and how to talk to clients as well as continuing education! I’d love the world to know about my business is that we are dependable, hard working and your new hair bestie.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting, it would be hard to really decide because there is so many places to visit! My favorite place to get drinks is either 8th wonder brewery or hanging out in the hammocks at axel rad! I tried this place called the present company that was absolutely delicious and then I’d take them to go visit smither park to see the art installations there!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this shout out to my family. First and foremost. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I didn’t have the support from my loved ones and children. My abuelita deserves a lot of credit for raising me to be the hard worker I am today. She inspired me so much as an immigrant not to take life or this country for granted.
