We had the good fortune of connecting with King Baby and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi King, what do you attribute your success to?
Never being afraid to just be myself & always believing that no matter what we must keep pushing forward. Understanding that so many times falling flat on your face in failure is all a part of your success. It’s a fine line to walk being a musician but you soon learn fast that things are only what you make of them.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I started King Baby Familia… There was a love for music as there has always been. I’m naturally a HipHop artist. But in HipHop the times move fast. I felt I had to do something different. Something that set me apart. There was a time that I actually quit music. Not because I didn’t love it anymore. But because I didn’t believe in it and where it was going. Nor did I any longer believe in myself I guess. I’d go out and see people on stage and watch from the crowd thinking… nope. That’s not you any more remember. Your done remember. I must say. It was so unnatural for me and very disturbing almost. Like a drug calling your name. I had a good friend who had a guitar that I used to write music with that I’d still go see from time to time. His name is Vincent Strings Lacy. I’d go to his house and he’d play and my inspiration was just gone. Depression, anxiety… it was a very dark time in my life. Slowly the music from the guitar somewhat started to heal me. It was a safe place for me. Slowly I felt my heart coming back and the lyrics stated to come back to me. Just him and I would sit for hours on his guitar and we made some amazing songs that in my mind we’re just us having fun. It was a stress reliever for me. Like a hitting a punching bag or helped me get it out of my head and turned into something else. My good friend soon moved to another city and once again the music started to haunt me. The songs, the lyrics, the feeling… I soon had this need to continue and truth be told… I started looking at the music section on Craigslist. I read the ads and decided to make one of my own. Calling out all musicians that wanted to be apart of something different. I must say, that was an experience hahaha. I started from the bottom and went through a lot of musicians to find my core group. Mohamed on guitar , Frank Alfar on drums, Rob Andrew’s on bass, and Robert Lauder on keys. It was funny because I still didn’t know what we really had until we got a few gigs our first being at the house of blues all by a freak accident really hahaha. Soon after I started booking more shows and met a great friend and brother in music. Joe GodFather Serrato. He helped us get on the Reggae scene and the next thing you know we started blowing up. Years later we’ve open for some huge names in Reggae and in HipHop and soon became headliner material ourselves. To get into all the details I’d be here all day. To keep it short alls I can say is I’m very grateful for how things worked out and the Familia that surrounds me. My band is part of my Family. My band is my Familia. King Baby Familia… I’m proud to say that’s exactly who I am and who I’m supposed to be. Mad mad love you know.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would definitely hit a music show depending on which one of my Familia members is playing where… now that I’ve been on the scene for a while and know most all local Musicians… someone is having a party somewhere believe that. My life revolves around my Familia and music… it’s all I know at times. I’ve made some great friends and family thru music and I’m so grateful. Not just other musicians, but the fans and the people who support us are some of the kindest and most uplifting people I’ve ever met. So much to do yet so little time. Alls I can say is we’re gonna have a great time somewhere in Texas please believe me.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d definitely love to send a huge shout out and thank you to my beautiful Wife Celeste AbuPain owner of Just Lavish Boutique. I’m so proud of her. Always there by my side pushing me forward and believing in my dreams every step of the way. She is my inspiration, my happiness, my smile. Mad Mad Love You Know.
