We had the good fortune of connecting with Kit Peltier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kit, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
There are two pivotal decisions that have shaped my photography business:
First, I invested in courses to better myself as a photographer and business owner. At the time, it felt like an expensive leap of faith to take, but having that framework in my back pocket has truly changed my business for the better. Now, I’m addicted to learning more and adding to my toolbox of knowledge (and equipment!). I can see a very material increase in my business, all as a result of learning how to shoot more efficiently and consistently!
Second, I randomly donated my services to a few charity organizations and WOW did that pay off! I have had so many amazing referrals come to me through those different organizations and while that wasn’t really my intention, it’s been such amazing organic growth. It’s taken me to new places, lead me to new people and even lead me into new areas of photography!
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally.
There’s two words that come to mind when I am shooting: movement and joy.
Those are my top two consistent factors I am trying to capture. I hope that when someone sees my work, they’re seeing a true joy radiate from my subject. I also hope they see a natural vibe that feels genuine. I try to make my sessions as painless as possible, where my clients can let loose a little bit. With that in mind, I hope that what sets me apart from others is that I am easy going, approachable and flexible. What makes me feel most proud of my work is when clients feel like the session was not only painless but the finished product goes way above and beyond their expectations!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston could *easily* fill an entire week and still leave you wanting more. So first, I’d make sure my bestie, Kat (yes…Kit and Kat, best friends since childhood!) got to come for an Astros playoff game, because that’s when Houston really shines. I think we’d hit up Brasserie Du Parc first, for some mimosas and truffle fries, if we’re feeling really ambitious.
The next day, we’d head to Queen Donut for a blueberry donut, followed by a long walk through the Clay Family Everglades. Then, I’d take her to the best baseball league in town, Timbergrove Sports Association, for some all star t-ball! If you think the Astros are good…you haven’t seen nothin’ yet! After a W, I’d take her and the family over to Preslee’s for frozen drinks & a chicken finger basket and post up on the swings for the rest of the day. Or, maybe Superica for a blood orange margarita…tough call. Maybe we’d do both? Yes, both.
Before sending her on her way, we’d spend the last morning at the Heights Mercantile, so we could shop at Favor the Kind, Marine Layer and Lemon Laine Skincare. And I guess we could hang out on the patio at Postino for a bit….twist my arm! If she decides to stay a bit later, I’d be easily persuaded to book some facials at Milk & Honey. That would be the icing on the cake of my dream weekend in Houston!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without a doubt, Amy and Jordan Demos! They’re an online teaching resource for photographers and taking their free course in 2015 is what prompted me to invest in their three part photography/business course over the next two years.
Their Facebook community is also super helpful and encouraging, so it’s the gift that keeps on giving, even several years after completing the courses. I love their shooting style, but their customer service style is top notch. They reinforce ways that photographers can serve and love their clients through photography and it’s truly shaped me.
