We had the good fortune of connecting with Kylie Rohrer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kylie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I was raised in a religious cult up until the age of fourteen. My entire family (grandparents included) was a part of the church. Growing up, I thought I was going to get married at a young age and never have a career or get to go to college. When we finally left, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to pursue a career and go to college. When you grow up in a box and then have the opportunity to leave the box, it’s very exciting and motivating. I’m grateful to live the life I live

.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I went to the University of Alabama during my freshmen year of college. Initially, I majored in biology. I really wanted to work with animals, specifically marine mammals. When I got to college, I joined several organizations and took several electives. One of the classes I took was a theater appreciation class. You must remember I grew up in a cult so I didn’t have exposure to much. I hadn’t really considered a different career until I got to college. After taking this class and attending theater productions, I fell in love with the theater. I wanted to take an acting class my spring semester, but I was never I wouldn’t be good enough. Fast-forward to January 2018, I took an acting class at the University of Central Florida where I transferred after my freshmen year at Alabama. I fell in love with acting but felt like I couldn’t pursue it any further because I was about to graduate from college. When I started my business and it was successful, it gave me the confidence to truly pursue acting. I think that’s what I was missing. This belief in myself. My therapist told me in the very beginning not to compare myself to other actors because it was silly to compare myself to someone who had been doing it for longer than I have. This was transformational for me. When I stumbled across Crash Acting in October 2020, it felt like a sign from the universe. I felt deeply drawn to Ben’s teaching. The community was so supportive in my journey and gave me the confidence to pursue it professionally. One of the reasons I love acting so much is because I get the opportunity to give someone the chance to step away from their reality for a moment and experience something beautiful. I have a deep desire to tell stories about real life. Like, real genuine beautiful experiences that we have. I believe the simplicities of life are the most beautiful. I believe art unites us – and I hope that my art can help people feel less alone. What I’ve learned from this journey is that you’re never going to get anywhere if you don’t start. I think the most difficult part of pursuing a new profession is starting. Sometimes you have to jump in before you are ready – especially if you feel called. I felt called to the arts my entire life. I have a deep desire to change the world through my art. That is why I love it so much.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Los Angeles, specifically, Silverlake. It’s one of my favorite spots in LA. I usually take any of my friends or family to visit the same couple of places. I LOVE coffee so we would start by going to Lamill. I go to Lamill usually 3-4 times a week. They have the BEST coffee in LA. Then I would take them to Griffith Park for a hike. The views are beautiful and I think it’s a great way to show off the entire city while spending some time outdoors. For lunch, I would probably take them to Homestate. It’s such a cute little taco spot right next to my house. They also have AMAZING (BUT DANGEROUS) frozen margaritas. Lastly, we would end the night at Bacari. This is my all-time favorite spot in LA. It looks like a little treehouse. If you go, you must order the pork belly. I dream about this dish on the daily.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
People:

1. Ben Mathes: I met Ben in October 2020. I had recently started my business and wanted to jump back into acting . October 9th, 2020. I was sitting on my bed in Sarasota. I got a notification for Crash Acting. I followed the account in early 2020 when I got the urge to pursue acting again. Suddenly, there was this man in his late early 40s yelling about acting on my phone screen. It was the one and only Benjamin Mathes. I remember being captivated by his words. He began speaking about how you’re never too old to start acting. A week later I audited his acting class. Ben has been the most amazing acting coach, mentor, and friend. Growing up I never really had a mentor. I deeply desired to have a person in my life that would see me for me. I always felt too small, too big, or not enough. From our very first conversation, he made me feel seen, supported, and loved. He’s the reason I’m still here. His ability to pour his heart and soul into everything he does is admirable. He’s truly one of the greatest souls on this Earth.

2. Grandparents: My grandparents were heavily involved in my childhood. They often babysat me and took care of me. Helped me with homework, took me on vacations, and helped me become the woman I am today.

3. Mother: My mother was a single mom and extremely hardworking. Although she was constantly busy, she never failed to show up in any way that she could She helped me get through college and move out to LA. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be where I am today!
