We had the good fortune of connecting with Anna N’Jie-Konte and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anna, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is something I’ve had a complicated relationship with throughout my life. I was raised by two risk-averse parents who prized security and a “sure thing” more than anything else. Their messaging around risk and our capacity to bounce back from failure pushed me to seek security for a long time.

However, it was only after working in my wealth management career for nearly a decade and realizing I was profoundly dissatisfied that I realized the bigger risk was in staying complacent and clinging to security over achievement or alignment. At that point I made the decision to leave corporate wealth management and found my own financial advisory firm- Dare to Dream Financial Planning.

That experience has taught me there is risk, but there is tremendous upside potential when you take risk.

Now I assess personal decisions through the following rubric:

Is this something I will regret not attempting when I’m 90?

Have I prepared enough to be knowledgeable and successful, but not so much that I am procrastinating?

How much of this potential success is dependent upon me v. other people?

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a financial advisor for entrepreneurial women of color who want to change their family’s financial trajectory and build generational wealth. I am so proud of and excited that I get to work with incredible women who are changing the world and our communities, but also prioritizing their financial health. It’s incredible to witness them build their businesses and achieve personal financial security.

It was not easy to get where I am today, but it was incredibly gratifying to be able to do so. I was profoundly dissatisfied with my corporate career because I could not serve the communtiy of women that I do now due to business model constraints. Now I am free to do so in a way that allows me to earn a living, build wealth for myself and be an active participant in my family and community. I wouldn’t trade that for anyting in the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to my favorite Colombian food restaurant, Mi Tierrita for a bandeja tipica and some arepas. I would then take them to my favorite beach- Robert Moses for a fun afternoon in the sun including ice cream and seaside naps.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I recognize the support of my #fintwit community as being integral to my ability to structure a profitable financial advisory business and not feeling so alone in this entrepreneurial endeavor.

I also recognize that I have the most incredible family and friend group who support me unconditionally. They cheer me on, encourage me and listen to me when I am tired or feeling defeated. A special shoutout to my husband Suleyman, my mom Stephany, and my best friends Melissa and Cristina who cheer me on relentlessly. I couldn’t have done this without them.
