We had the good fortune of connecting with Lanneah Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lanneah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I sat at home one day saying I was tired of working for other people and I want to start my own business doing something that I am passionate about and that’s making bead jewelry. I been making jewelry since I was a little girl and seeing then how people loved my creations always put joy in my heart. I felt like the money never meant anything to me, it was the smile on people faces and that’s what I missed. So I went to the store the next day, bought all the material I needed and here I am now two years later with Beadnineteen standing strong and approving more everyday. Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Beadnineteen is all about bead and crystal jewelry that no one else will have. When I make these creations of mine I try to make it where it do not repeat so everyone can have their own personal and unique piece. Business-wise I got to where I am now by always staying consistent with promoting and going out there to sell. It was not a easy journey but the key is to always be patient and never give up. The most important lesson I learned was at the end of the day everything is up to me and I will not be the reason for my business to fail. To be the one to make the jewelry and be the one to sale it, it does get challenging sometimes but I always keep a positive mind and push forward. I truly love what I do and it’s more than money for me and I didn’t start to give up. Nothing you truly love is easy. I want the world to know that beadnineteen is not just a beading company but it’s all about love and positivity. My jewelry is for my customers to love and enjoy and not just about business for me.If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If one of my friends was coming from out of town and wanted to visit Houston I would take them to Blck Market so they can support amazing black owned business and have great food, drinks, and music to dance to. There is nothing more precious than surrounding yourself with positive vibes. Another place I would choose is Hermann park area. You have great restaurants, museums, the zoo and of course the park that always have great scenes and events. You can do so much in one area walking distance without getting in and out the car.The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a special shout out to my mom for always believing me and helping me start off by taking my jewelry and cards to her job, telling people about my business, and give me that extra push in the beginning. Since day one she been my number one fan. I also want to give a special shoutout to my husband for believing me knowing that we have kids to take care and never doubting my business. He always believed that I would do well and never had a “what if” in mind.
