We had the good fortune of connecting with LaShawnda Ausbon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaShawnda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My dad has been an entrepreneur most of my life and I love the fact that he was always able to be there for me and this is something that I knew would be a core value for me when I had children. To have autonomy over my time has always been my goal and being a business owner gives me that. In More recent years wellness has become something that I believed to be important for everyone. I decided that if I could open a spa it would feel like I was having fun instead of going to a job every day. I started off by getting my Massage License in 2012 after college. Massage therapy really fell into my lap. I choose this license because I thought it would be an easy way to get in to the spa and wellness industry, but come to find out I love it.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Well, the journey to Self Center Studios Day Spa has been a long one, I established this business in 2014. I started off as a mobile massage therapist. I did that for 2 years before renting my first suit I have has many long days and nights as a one women show. I was wearing all the hats. I have even tried a few times to partner with other service providers which turned out not to be the right move for the business, this lesson has cost me money and time that I could never get back. Our visions just never seemed to line-up. I learned that most people have the goal of making the most money for the least amount of effort and they want to touch as many people as possible. This is in direct contrast to SCS mission which is to be a constant and effective part of our clients wellness routine. That is what sets my business a part from most day spas. Our goal is to provide a high quality service so that when clients leave they feel better than when they came and can’t wait too come back for their next session. We work with clients on a one on one bases, our clients are the center of our time. unlike a lot of day spas that can be a social experience. I have learned not to alter my vision to work with others and now I have a business that I can truly be proud of and that attract the right clients. I work along side other people that are like minded in a community that value my business. I am grateful.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am really a home body and like to cook so I would host them at home, but if we just wanted to get out for some reason. I would have to say that I am a foodie and love seafood so we would head to Crab Station or Protect Park to catch a vibe. I also enjoy a good brunch so Qoutes would be the place for that.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
While I have a great support system in my friends and family. I would have to say that my husband Brandon has been my number one supporter on this journey. I would like to dedicate this shoutout to him.
