We had the good fortune of connecting with Lillian Sims and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lillian, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thoughts on starting LGS (Lights, Glam& Shoot) Photography was being able to be my own boss and doing what I love while making money! I first thought of my business name which turned out to be the initials of my name, so it was perfect! I then researched multiple photography business and their prices. I went to family members and asked how they felt about some prices, what was all included with that price and how they felt about the overall pictures. As I figured, they all agreed that it was too expensive! Also the images didn’t have a natural look to them! I knew I wanted to differ from other photographers in this big market and so I decided to have inexpensive prices and keep my clients looking as natural as possible in their images. Also I wanted my business to show individuals that my images represents family, love, and beauty. My first clients were my intermediate family and I graduated into offering my services to extended family members. Then eventually I put myself out there with the help of my business cards and Instagram, family referrals, and my website.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your craft, what can you share with our community?
My photography is different than others and it attracts a certain type of clients. As stated before, my images are very natural looking, I don’t do a lot of edits on my clients themselves, maybe some highlights in certain areas of their face and add very little saturation to their clothes. I will edit their surroundings if need be but other than that I don’t filter out my clients. It wasn’t easy to just staying with natural photos because today’s social media is counting on airbrush or very saturated images. I over came this challenge by knowing what I want for my reputation as a photographer and thinking about how individuals will look at their images 10 years from now and not recognize themselves because they were so filtered.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I don’t get out much lol but I recently visit some places that are really great spots to hang out at! The first place is called the Clutch Bar, it’s located around midtown area in Houston. Its a super chilled vibe with great mimosa’s and food! I ordered the chicken and waffles and it is a must to try! Another place is Cidercade! Super fun with all the classic arcade games, you won’t get bored, you will want to stay there all day! They serve ciders which I discovered I’m not a big fan of but it never hurts to try new things! They don’t serve food but you are allowed to bring in outside food just no drinks and they do have fountain drinks available too. This place is in Downtown Houston not too far from the Minute Maid Park. Shopping at malls like Katy mills or First Colony mall are fun things to do with a bestie! And for a sweets eater like me I will definitely recommend Red Circle Ice Cream!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is a few people I will love to shout out starting with my entire family who are always so supportive in anything I do and without them I wouldn’t have the confidence to start this business. I will specifically like to shout out my big sister, Allicette a.k.a Lachelle. She has her own hair business and she taught me different ways and tips of starting my own business. Lachelle showed me different ways to market my photography and how to get recognized locally! Thank you so much big sis, love you! Another person I will like to shout out is mom/assistant! My Momma most of the time takes me to location shoots and is always there to lend a helping hand. She helps me with different poses and props for my clients and makes my clients smile and laugh with her silly jokes and AMAZING Energy! Thanks mom, love you!
