We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Joubert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
So you want to open a venue? A lot of people have come up to me expressing their desire to open their own event space especially after seeing that I have stayed open during the Covid-19 pandemic. I think a lot of people see running an event venue similar to a rental property…you have your rent costs and charge per event and they think it’s a no brainer to have passive income. There is NOTHING passive about managing an event space! Each client is unique and comes to you with their once in a lifetime experiences they are trusting you with. Clients are trusting you to be transparent about what you can provide for them in their budget and there are countless behind the scene hours with staff and follow up to make sure everything runs smoothly the days of leading to the event. Sometimes clients don’t understand why there are certain rules in place that protect the venue and client. Once we had a non licensed caterer set fire to our curtains! Having a coordinator is essential so the venue can correspond with them and keep the stress off client. It is essential hiring staff that love working with people and can communicate during high stressful or emotional situations (two mother in laws fighting over the floor plan the day of wedding…it happens!)
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Creatives are my soul mates! I grew up very sheltered and religious and felt very boxed in most my life. The rules I was trying to live up to were impossible. At 18 I ran away to ballroom dancing which I fell in love with. The music, movement, crazy creatives and costumes were so exciting. In 2006 on my 25th birthday I became a national dance champion and opened my first dance studio later that year. I loved taking my corporate clients that struggled with their expressive side and seeing their posture improve and their ability to LET GO! I love teaching and choreographing and have worked with thousands of clients! I have learned how to communicate with clients (no two are alike!) and how to give them realistic expectations for the time commitment and lesson budget they have for a certain deadline. Hosting events happened after Harvey hit Houston and many people were searching for available spaces for their weddings and special events. We have a club level sound system, reclaimed wood dance floor, and modern tables and just needed the party! Surprisingly, the years of managing people and being responsible for their dance programs, performances and competition trips have made it easier to transition into organizing events. I love to see people enjoy their friends and family on their special day. I am very proud to have a true Houston City venue in the heart of Houston. So many spaces people have to drive outside of Houston and I love we are 10 minutes from Downtown and right off of Washington!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Now is the perfect time for non Houstonians visit!
Monday-Coffee Stop at Catalina Coffee, followed by walk at Memorial Park, picnic at the Water Wall. Dinner at Hugo’s followed by bar hopping that night off Washington.
Tuesday- Shopping in River Oaks followed by Happy Hour at State of Grace. Maybe Truck Yard that night.
Wednesday-Houston Zoo and Herman Park, dinner later at MAD.
Thursday-HMFA is free on Thursdays! Dancing and drinks that night to live salsa music at Sambucca’s.
Friday-Day in Galveston and Pleasure Pier.
Saturday-Morning at Urban Harvest Farmer’s Market. Dinner Doris Metropolitan.
Sunday-Brunch at Toulouse, Heights Shops, Graffiti wall tours (and selfies)
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My amazing artistic husband, Chris Joubert! The reason my space is so beautiful is he custom built the chandeliers, custom made our modern farmhouse tables and create the massive art on the walls! He really put a lot of blood, sweat and tears (literally) into building and creating the space of my dreams. Our clients are artistic, modern and think outside the box of love this city venue vibe! Beyond building something beautiful, he has been an amazing dad to our two boys while I have had long hours and “club hours” at work.
