We had the good fortune of connecting with Logan Elise Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Logan Elise, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking in the hair industry is such a large component of our career. Without it there is no growth, and without growth you become “stagnant”. Your clients can feel this from you and will venture off to more exciting opportunities. There is a line to draw when taking risks with someones looks, but taking risks to figure out where to draw those lines is a must.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I lived in Stillwater, OK my entire life and started doing hair in 2016. Growing up I never really knew exactly what I wanted to be. I was always into art, and was the definition of teenage angst. Thought I would get into photography, or open my own pet rescue, but was always discouraged. I was told these professions would not hold up and I would spend my life struggling. This contributed to some interesting thought processes I had about my place in the world as I was growing up. Once high school ended, I went straight into college, where I failed miserably. I hated the environment of the classrooms. I had such a hard time focusing because I am such a hands on person. Once I dropped out I started working at a salon my stylist owned as a receptionist. This is where I grew an interest in the industry. I applied to a cosmetology program at the votech school in my hometown and waited a year to be accepted in. After a surprisingly quick 2 years, I graduated and started working as a stylist near the college campus. Being so close to all of the students gave me great opportunities to build my clientele. Took me about 2 years and my books were filled. As much as I loved my hometown and all of the clients I had built relationships with, I always envisioned something more for my career. Doing hair in a smaller town has a different vibe to it. Its much more relaxed, and oriented around building/providing for a family. I’ve always wanted a family, but I’ve also always been a little non traditional. Call me the black sheep of our family. After meeting my now fiance, he suggested that we move to Houston after he graduated to start at job where he had been interning. I had been looking for an opportunity for something more for so long, but actually being presented with the option made me do some deep thinking about my future. I had a solid clientele base in Oklahoma, and leaving that to start from scratch somewhere else was terrifying. I suffer from depression and anxiety so I was a little worried about what such a big move would do to my psyche. My family plays such a big role in my life, and being so far from them was going to rock my world, but I knew I had my fiance and dog best friend Tucker at my side. After we moved to Houston, I started my job at a salon where I initially felt I had found my tribe. I went into everything with so much anxiety about how I would be accepted in, and on the surface everything was picture perfect. Once you spend enough time with someone, or working somewhere you begin to see where the seams are cracked. Sometimes it isn’t hard to patch up those seams and move on, but others it shows their true colors and you have to really ask yourself if you’re okay with how said seams are cracking. I think sometimes its easy for stylist to get manipulated by small business owners, especially when you’re starting from zero and trying to work your way up. After shit hit the fan (pardon my french) with covid and the climate of the salon, I moved into a salon suite. Thought this was great idea after everything I had just gone through with the salon and being afraid of exposure. I couldn’t wait to decorate my suite and start creating my business my way. As much as I wanted my suite to feel like a success I partially felt like I was isolating myself. After almost a year of working alone, I missed having a team around me. Having a team around you makes coming to work all the more motivating. I decided to not renew my suite lease and found a new salon with a team that allows me to feel a part of something more than myself while giving me the freedom to run my business and live my life with balance. I’m currently building my clientele, so if you know someone in need of an awesome hairstylist who truly cares about them and their hair please send them my way!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being new to Houston during covid I honestly feel like I could be the best friend being shown a good time. If I have a friend or family come to visit I always suggest the museum of natural science, or maybe to a play at the Alley Theater. Probably spend a day in Galveston because I’m still not over the fact that I live less than an hour (on a good day) from the ocean. I would take them out to eat at Fusion Taco, Oishii, Raw Sushi, Chewys, EggHaus, and Voodoo donut. There are so many places that I haven’t even tried!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I don’t want to be cliche, but my family has contributed so much to my life. I’m thankful that they gave me the tools and support I needed to be successful and be where I am today. My fiance has also been a huge push for me. He has so much drive it inspires me to match his energy and be the best I can be for us and our future. Having a teammate in this crazy life means so much to me. Lastly I’d like to give my cosmetology instructor a huge shout out for being the most inspiring, caring, devoted teacher any student could ask for. She was stern and knew how to put you in your place, but she always did this with so much respect and genuine care. I could feel from her she wanted all of us to succeed.
