We had the good fortune of connecting with Gwendolyn Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gwendolyn, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
I believe as a single mom the single most important thing I have done is shown my girls that there is no ceiling of possible in our lives. Pursuing every gift and dream inside of you is not just about saying it, it is actually in the doing! I have had a 26 year career in education as a teacher, Math Specialist and a interventionist, a district leader, & taught every grade K-9. I left my career to start my Professional Organizer business A Date With Your Space in 2014. I returned to education in 2017 but would not give up on entrepreneurship. I left again this year in 2021 to not only continue my first business but to start a New Business called Munched by G Jonesy. I am determined to show my girls that giving up is never an option but the opportunity to grow and be better is always the option!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have a very creative mind. And I am very passionate with all I do. As an educator I was the singing, rapping dancing, fun teacher I always wanted growing up! It has just spilled over to my businesses. I am not a cookie cutter type personality and I love breaking down Norms of what the expectations are. Yep a little Rebel! This has come from growing up an in adopted household that was not the most positive example or experience. Being a young teenage single parent the odds were stacked against me, and there have been countless moments and times where I did not think I would overcome the life given to me. But my faith in God, my desire to prove others wrong and the Grit I have been given has simply given me a I can’t give up mentality. I have a Master Degree in Instructional Technology and for years always believed education would change the course of my future… it absolutely did and help me discover the other gifts inside of me as well! The greatest lesson I have learned along the way is my attitude about what is going on around me can either sink my ship or keep it afloat to my destination. I get to choose the reaction I have no matter what is going on. There is power in that.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am such a simple lover of the simple life! I love landmarks and unique finds in Houston and the Surrounding areas! The Water Wall, going on a graffiti wall tour, starting in the Heights, visiting my favorite Parks and trails, starting with Memorial and then Terry Hersey visiting some of our unique little known eating spots like my Thai food spot hidden in a little neighborhood bar called Straight out of Bangkok, or the best ice cream I have ever had a Jen’s Splendid Ice cream, cupcakes from Crave, shopping at Memorial City Mall, and finishing the week showing off my favorite golf course where I sneak and find the best sunsets. A different kind of tour around the city!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to all My education mentors, teachers I have worked song side during my education career and every student I ever impacted, as they have grown me in ways that prepared me for the rigors of my entrepreneurial endeavors. My school districts include Alief ISD, NYC Department of Education, Alvin ISD, Duncanville ISD and Dallas ISD. My oldest daughter Desiree who has grown up along side me while I was a young mother at 17 with a 6 month old who went to college with me. Everything I am is because of your love. And my desire to show you we could!
