We had the good fortune of connecting with Lolita Guarin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lolita, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I didn’t wake up one day and thought to myself – ” I will start a business!” I was working a full-time job; stress impacted my health to the point that I got physically sick. After finding natural ways to manage my anxiety, I was very eager to share my experiences with others. I did a lot of free coaching at first, until one day, I decided to monetize it. Charging for my services was not only a way of earning extra money but one way how to help others to help themselves. Just think, if someone gives you a book as a gift and then you buy another book. Which one will you read it first? I noticed that my paying clients had a better success rate in changing their habits than those who got coaching at no cost.
What should our readers know about your business?
I have been to many networking events, and I have never met another stress management expert. I think it is not because I uncovered something so unique and new, but because many think of stress in their lives not as problematic but as something that will never change or go away, like sunlight. I seek to teach others that stress management should not be stressful or take up a lot of your time. Few changes here or there, a mindset change, can make a big difference in one’s life. Many new clients tell me that they don’t have time to manage their stress because they are busy running the business and taking care of their families. Then I ask them who will take care of their family when they get sick? After no answer, I remind them that you need to take care of yourself first in order to take care of others. Somehow this society rewards the sacrifices. There is nothing wrong with taking care of others, but not by depleting yourself, but by inspiring, nurturing others from an abundance of respect and love for yourself. I am sad to think that it took a pandemic to recognize the importance of mental health, anxiety, depression in our lives. Recognizing it is the first step, so we can start making new habits that will change not only our but those who we love lives as well.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my best friend to the museum district. There are plenty of restaurants that can provide wide variety of tastes, and plenty of art to look at, education in natural science museum or even go to the zoo. And if it is summer, at the evening can enjoy a concert outside!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout-out to YouTube. Yes, I know, that is very weird to think of YouTube as something grand, but living through a pandemic, I realized how much of a treasure chest that is when you know what you are looking for. I start my mornings with affirmations, interviews of amazing people, inspiring and educational stories. Throughout the day, I listen to all kinds, ages, or languages of music. I can learn how to do something because if someone did it, it must be on YouTube. During the evening, I can watch a movie in any language and fall asleep to a meditation.
