We had the good fortune of connecting with Luz Castilla and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luz, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
What many outsiders or people who are not in the visual creation industry (photography, film, movies etc) are probably unaware of is that creatives who are in the prime of their career do not get their proper credit for their work. Thats a big problem for creators, and the worse part is that it is very common. I have experienced this and seen fellow creatives go through this as well. Wether it be not tagging, paying, taking into consideration, or even a thank you. People fail to understand the problems of this specific industry. Other people fail to realize is that us visual creators, create as a means to make a living and when we are constantly being used for content, we start to doubt our abilities. In that note start paying and giving credit to YOUR VISUAL CREATORS.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It was easy for me because creating was like a second nature, I could create whatever came to my head and bring it to life. I could listen to a song, look at an object and make art based in that feeling. I myself don’t know how I do that.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely going out to a Vietnamese restaurant called Pho Thanh on Eldridge rd, they have the best Vietnamese food in Houston hands down. I would go there in high school with my best-friends, it would be our to go spot!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely, I would have to say where I grew up. Growing up in ALIEF was a unique experience, there was always opportunities for those who didn’t have many options, met incredible teachers like Eunice Beene who I met. while I was in high school. Her Charisma and her belief that I could do anything I put my mind to helped me be great at what I do, she believed in me and continues to believe in me and I am forever grateful. She always checks up on me and never misses to encourage me in all my endeavors. As well as her husband Carl Beene and her daughter who keep me in mind, when it comes to my well being and photography..
