We had the good fortune of connecting with Tia Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tia, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote is “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” by Dr. Maya Angelou. Reason being is that it sums up my individual personality. There is a difference between having a survival versus thriving mentality. I want growth, I want success, but not at the expense of my character and personality! A lot of people forget who they are at their core because they are trying to “survive”. I prefer to bring my substance with me everywhere I go.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Currently, I am in the Army Reserves and a student studying my bachelors in Healthcare Management. Not only am I President of Bei Diamanti, I am also a Secretary for another non-profit organization known as Maternity Journey. MJ supports women through their pregnancy and post-partum phase. After, BD steps in and help the women transition back to womanhood and not lose themselves in motherhood. I am proud of the change BD and MJ has made in the community, being able to supply women with different resources to become better women, is amazing to me. As far as my long-term career goals, I want to eventually open me up a woman’s health clinic that covers our women in a full 360. It will not and is not an easy task, being a mom myself, my hands are full. Nonetheless, I have the calling, the passion, and the drive to push this thing out. It is imperative to me to help woman with their spiritual, mental, physical, sexual, and financial health. Women are the first teachers of the home, if our women are together, the world will come together.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The best spots in the city for me is near a body of water. I would take my bestfriend to the beach and actually have wine and a picnic in a semi-secluded area. The ocean gives me a sense of clarity and peace. Outside of going to the beach, I also like to go to Papadauex for great seafood and drinks!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to recognize my family, (my mom and four aunts) in particular. I cannot necessarily choose one individual that contributed to the reason I started this organization. I have a different relationship with all five women, however, one thing that became a common denominator, is well, they are all women. They are amazing educated women with different stories, but similar ups and downs. I have always been observant of my surroundings, but honestly, some stuff they did, I didn’t quite understand. It initially started with me wanting a better understanding of my mother. As a child, we look at our parents as superhumans, but the best thing I could have done was taken the title of “mommy” off and look at her as a “woman”. So, by doing that I realized that we all are somehow yearning for the same thing, to be heard! By listening and actually hearing them, I saw a problem in our community and I wanted to be apart of the solution.
