We had the good fortune of connecting with Maestro The Cellist and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maestro, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking is essential for any artists growth and development. It expands our artistry and can take you to the next level of your career. Putting myself out there as an African American male playing the cello has always been a risk because there not many of us out there. However, by taking a risk and staying true to my passion I have broken barriers and achieve things I never would have thought possible.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Before anything, I am a music educator. I received my bachelor’s degree from George Mason University where I major in String Pedagogy- the art of teaching string instruments. I now having a teaching business called “Mark’s Music Prep” where I teach people of all ages how to play various instruments including the cello, violin, piano, as well as how to read and compose music. Teaching was an undiscovered passion until I had my first part time teaching position while I was still completing me degree. One of the things I admire most about music is that it’s not 1 dimensional. There are many avenues you can embark on such as teaching, composing, and performing and more.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am in the Washington DC area where there are lots of things to do! I would absolutely start off with brunch, as DC has many bottomless brunch options. The National Harbor and Geroge Town are nearby and offer exquisite cruise tours of the area that features breath taking views and great drinks. Next, for dinner I would head down to the Wharf which has some of the best seafood in the world complemented by more beautiful views of the Potomac. Finally, we would then head down to U street for the nightlife. There’s a plethora of bars, lounges, and clubs along the street!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother has always motivated me and kept me going. Moments when I am fed up and think about giving up, she is always there to remind me that I am capable of reaching new heights regardless of what others might think or say. She is my backbone and has played a major role in the person that I am today.
