We had the good fortune of connecting with Makayla King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Makayla, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As a new mother and a wife of almost 4 years, I find myself battling between making time for my husband, my son and being a boss making moves to take my business to the next level. Ultimately, my family comes first of course but this is still my livelihood. I have nurtured it for 13 years and haven’t reached my peak yet. Thankfully, I have a very supportive husband who understands what my career comes with and does all he can to help give me the space I need to excel. Since I have become a mother, I have cut back to only working late nights about 4 days out the month, I only work until 2 pm on Saturdays and I make a point to get off by 530 latest on all other days of the month. This ensures that I am home to cook for my family (on most days), bathe and kiss my baby good night and spend quality time with my husband. I also have to be sure to make time for family events on as well! It can be ALOT but when you are doing something that you love so much, you work it out !
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Honestly, my personality is what my clients love most about me. I guess its just that Pisces energy! I’m always a great ear for my clients and they always get a few laughs while sitting in my chair. Most importantly, no matter how long i have been servicing a client, my professionalism never changes. I learned that people actually really do appreciate a hairstylist that takes their time with them, doesn’t make them feel like they’re being rushed and simply giving them a warm experience. i have witnessed stylist that were just ok at styling hair but have an amazing clientele simply because of how nice and welcoming they are! Luckily, being a people person comes naturally. My warm spirit and true want to make sure that every client leaves happy has definitely taken me a long way and I think it always will!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Seeing that I LOVE live music, that would definitely be a stop during her visit. One of my favorite places is Cafe 4212 near Turkey leg hut. As for food, just so many!! Taste Kitchen and Bar is one of our ultimate favorites for amazing chicken and waffles, seafood pasta and more. Mikkis Soul Food would definitely be a stop as well. Can’t leave without some of the most amazing comfort food in town. Houston has more than food though. If you want to dance, you can go to the infamous Red Rooster, turn up spot would be KAMP, and day party spot would be Savoy of Houston or NOMAD. We would definitely swing by Discovery Green and try to catch a food truck festival and take lots of pics!! Lastly, we would get a day pass at Margaritaville and have a fun day drinking and eating by the pool!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
While the obvious answer is my family as they have always supported my business by paying for their services, helping purchase my start up supplies and simply giving ideas to help my business move forward, I have to also shed light on my biggest mentor Ms. Ella Bilton. She has known me since I was a little girl and once I moved here from Milwaukee (after high school), she heard that I was interested in doing hair and immediately took me under her wings. I was in cosmetology school while I also worked as her assistant and this really laid the foundation for me as a hairstylist. She taught me about product knowledge. multitasking, how to handle conflict, how to properly schedule clients and most importantly, how to manage my money. Cosmetology school teaches us the basics of doing hair but ultimately, a stylist truly learns once they are behind the chair.
