Meet Makia Golliday DJ CAYJUYN SPYCE | Disc Jockey and Music Curator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Makia Golliday DJ CAYJUYN SPYCE and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Makia Golliday, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Honestly, the most important factor behind my success is staying true to the essence of Cayjuyn Spyce. I don’t care where I’m playing or who’s in the crowd. I approach every set like it’s my last chance to do what I love. I show up as my full, authentic self, no matter what. I genuinely love making people happy through music. It’s like our own personal therapy session. And I think the audience feels that passion when I “spyce” up an event. I’ve created my own lane, and my focus isn’t on competing with others it’s about outdoing my last performance, blending different flavors (genres) and making an event memorable.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart is my ability to play for any event and any audience. It’s not about thinking I’m the best it’s about knowing I’ve put the work in, and I’m still putting in work every single day. I serve up unique flavors, à la carte, with each mix guaranteed to leave you craving more. I craft and curate the perfect sound to please your palate, blending fresh discoveries with timeless classics. My sets are a custom recipe of beats that can’t be replicated. That’s why I call myself the Secret Ingredient it’s my flavor, my approach, my energy that makes the difference.
One of the things I’m most proud of is hosting my own DJ class for girls in my community called Spin with Spyce. The idea came from a conversation with one of my mentors, author Joyce Johnson, and I brought it to life right here on Galveston Island. The event introduced a brief history of female DJs, explored the art of DJing, shared my personal journey, and gave the girls hands-on experience with the turntables. The goal was to inspire young ladies to dream big and learn a skill that could be used either as a hobby or as a stream of income. Seeing their excitement and curiosity lit a whole new fire in me.
I got where I am today by taking what was given to me and grinding to achieve more. I started DJing at just 11 years old under my dad’s company, DJ’SRUS, performing as DJ Makia Rene’. When I attended Texas State University, I evolved into DJ CAYJUYN SPYCE and started making my mark. I earned Rookie of the Fall at KTSW 89.9, won the BSA Battle of the DJs in 2020, and hosted my own specialty show, The Spyce Rack.
But it hasn’t always been easy. I faced challenges like attending parties in my college town but not having my equipment to throw my own, and watching COVID-19 bring some of my dreams to a standstill. But once I graduated and came back home, I hit the ground running. I started handling my own business and putting my name out there, set by set.
One thing I’ve learned along the way is this: the only person standing between you and your success is you. You can go as far as you’re want to go. If there’s no room at the table, pull up your own chair or set your own table. And if a door closes, kick it down.
I want the world to know that my fire started as a toddler in our home studio on Galveston Island, TX and that flame hasn’t burned out yet. I love what I do, I’m grateful for every moment, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds. This is only the beginning.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m an Island Girl through and through, but I love that ride up 45 to the H. Houston’s got so many hidden gems and dope spots I could go on for days. First, we’re definitely grabbing some food from Toasted Yolk, Lard Hav Mercy, Peppaz Food Truck, Doña Leti’s, Trill Burgers or JJ’s — it really depends on the mood, but trust, the flavors are gonna hit every time.
If we’re catching a cute vibe and sipping something nice, we’re sliding through Groove’s, Face’s, or Ciel for some of the best drinks in town. Now, if we’re trying to dance all night? We’re headed to Neighbors for their R&B Game Night, Boondocks during Fantastic Voyage, Off The Record, or Bald Kitty.
There’s so many places to explore in the H and it’s a whole experience every time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my Shoutout to the Creator God first, and to my dad DJ Bigg Mac, my mama Mrs. G, and my baby sister Dolla$.
