We had the good fortune of connecting with Malika Stewart and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Malika, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
As a physician, working at Valley Oaks Medical Group Houston, I help the community daily by taking care of the community. I take care of people by listening to them and addressing their medical needs. By providing quality health care, I am able to serve the community and help people maintain a quality and productive lifestyle. I am truly passionate about educating my patients as well so they can advocate for themselves and know how to manage their health and share that information with family members and friends.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Medicine is an art and it takes hard work, persistence and perseverance to complete the journey of medical training. I feel what sets me apart from other people and physicians is my drive, empathy and directness I have with my patients. If you are a patient of mine or know me personally, you know I am open, honest and direct about medical concerns and the things we need to accomplish to meet health goals and address problems. I tell people I can give you the recommendations and the education but you have to do the work. I will not be at home with you watching you or telling you what you should and shouldn’t do although we have discussed those things extensively. I listen and give time to my patients so we can address their needs and concerns, The issue with medicine is that there is a time limit but I still do my best to make time for my patients even when running behind. I also truly care and want them to get better in their health, wellness and overall life. I may ask about your social life and family because those are intricate details that can help me take care of you as a person because I know about your life circumstances and dynamics. I have been told by patients no one has ever spent this much time with me or asked me all these questions, I am detailed and I genuinely want to know my patients, I am a family medicine physician, I want to know you and your family so that in the end you will feel comfortable with me and after years of care, I too become family to you.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God is always going to get recognition for my life successes and then comes great family and friends that have supported me mentally and financially at times through my growth and journey to be coming a physician. My parents have always been there since I was little pushing me to follow my dreams and supporting me on my long journey of education. My husband, my brother and mentor have also been great with encouraging me and pushing me to achieve my goals. I am thankful to all of them for the support and endless love given.
