We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Resendiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria, how do you think about risk?
I have thought about “risk taking” all of my life. I think about how it can affect my family and my self. That is because I help provide things for my family. It’s not easy being okay with taking risk, because you genuinely don’t know what is waiting for you on the other side. However I’ve learned if you don’t take certain risks in life then comfort will follow you forever and personally I’m not okay with staying comfortable. I moved to California when I was 21 just a few days after turning 21 and at that moment I thought I was grown enough and adult enough to take life on my own…boy was I wrong. However it was the best decision I ever made by taking the risk. It built me and gave me a stronger mind set and I haven’t looked back ever since.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a local Makeup Artist in Houston Texas. Open to travel, my main focus and passion is the editorial world. I am open for any creative outlet with makeup however my strongest asset is runway makeup. I obsess over graphic line work or anything abstract. I am a part of Haute Houston, I’m extremely proud of how far I’ve gotten in my career with a simple intern opportunity. People ask me for advice and the biggest advice I have for anyone who is wanting to work in the editorial part of our industry is: say yes to every opportunity that comes your way even if it’s unpaid. You never know who you may meet/connect with. Our world is a full 360 in network, you have to be determined and confident in your work. Remain humble. Share your success, help your fellow artist. We are all we have. Being creative is a huge blessing, let your work speak for its self. This world is not easy and things don’t happen over night so have patience and allow your self to struggle but never dwell. REMEMBER: F.A.I.L.=First Attempt In Learning (Failure only exist if you decide to quit) NO=Next Opportunity
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Houston, Texas. Our night life is the BEST but due to Covid I’d say my house with LOTS of wine!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to recognize owner Deshawn Taylor of @hautehoustonofficial for granting me the opportunity to become Makeup Supervisor. He brought his vision to life and started working on his project which became Haute Houston, a yearly Fashion Show for the south. He allowed a lot of artist like my self to network and build our name. I am forever grateful for all he has done for my fellow artist, my city and my self.
