We had the good fortune of connecting with Mariah Sliwinski and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mariah, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“Nobody owns the right to a white T-shirt.” A professor once said this to me, and it has stuck with me ever since. As an entrepreneur in any industry, imposter syndrome can be a real challenge, and the fashion industry is no exception. This quote is a reassuring reminder that even the most basic, universal ideas can be reimagined. I love this saying because it encourages creativity without fear. No matter how saturated an industry may seem, there’s always space for my own success, the opportunity to reach a new audience, and ability to make it uniquely my own.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I created a business focused on custom made dresses for any event. I work one-on-one with all my clients for consultations, fabric sourcing, sketching, patternmaking, cutting/sewing, and lots of fittings! I’m so excited to be tapping into to wedding industry, with 2nd looks becoming more and more popular, it’s becoming one of my favorite events to dress for! I also offer rentals of some of my custom-made pieces, allowing anyone to wear a unique, handcrafted piece for a special event or a night out!
I began sewing when I was about 17 and fell in love with creating anything for friends and family. Initially sewing was just a hobby and I hadn’t considered it as a career. I was using store bought patterns, re-creating them and hated that I couldn’t call them my own. I knew I wanted to pursue design, so I moved to L.A. to learn the craftsmanship of patterning, and after my 2.5 years studying, I moved home and started creating right away. Lots of lessons have been learned along the way, it can be stressful wearing all of the hats, but I wouldn’t change a thing because I get to do what I love. I find it so rewarding when someone feels beautiful and confident, I hope to make every women love what we create together!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The perfect place to yap with the girls over a glass of wine is Postinos! Trattoria Sofia, Coltivare, and Ra Sushi are also solid places to grab food! For a fun night downtown, I’d grab drinks at SoHo Garden, Notsuoh, and Behind Closed Doors. If you have time to venture out, grab brunch at Leeland House or Sugar & Rye in Galveston and walk the strand. Theres also so many great thrift shops, coffee shops and museums to check out!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the constant support of my friends and family. Their encouragement and constant belief in me have made all the difference. I’m so grateful for the support of my husband celebrating my smallest wins just as much as my biggest ones. Thankful for family that supports my creative career and literally helped me build my studio and friends that run countless errands with me. Of course, I must shoutout everyone who has trusted me to bring their vision to life, putting my name in your dress is something I am so thankful for.
