We had the good fortune of connecting with Marilu V Valdez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marilu V, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
As much as I love showing my work and interacting with customers at markets, it can be hard to take a break from it. I truly enjoy making polymer clay earrings, but it is not a fun feeling when I hit a creative roadblock. Taking a break from markets can be beneficial for me as it helps my mind reset.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Learning new clay techniques! When I first started working with polymer clay, I had no idea what I was doing. Even though I did some research on polymer clay beforehand, I still had a lot of trial and errors especially the first year of creating. Although I am proud that my work as improved throughout the years, I can confidently say that the learning never stops. I am always finding new ways to better myself and my work.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

The first place to grab a bite at would be Tacos A Go Go for a variety of Tex-Mex options. Now if you love birria tacos than TJ Birria Y Mas is the place to be! Another favorite food spot is Jinya Ramen Bar. Their ramen bowl called “JINYA Tonkotsu Black” is a must try! Frank’s Pizza and Pink’s Pizza are both a Houston staple for delicious, quality pizza. Now as for dessert, I love to go to “El Bolillo” for freshly made pan dulce. Hands down the best bakery in Houston!

The Houston Farmers Market is a great place to shop for fruits and vegetables. If you happen to go during the weekend, you’ll find a pop-up market with several local artisans. Memorial Park is a good place to stretch, walk, and enjoy the breeze. Discovery Green is another spot to stroll around and perhaps run into an event during the weekend. The Post not only has a large food court, but it also has an incredible view of Houston’s skyline.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

My partner, Hernan! He has been so supportive of my work and I. He is literally the first person I show my work to and explain my ideas to. Hernan helps me in so many ways such as setting up and tearing down my booth, brings me lunch while I continue to interact with customers, puts earrings on cards, and so much more. I am beyond grateful to have him as my other half!

Another shoutout would be for my mother, who is also named Marilu. She always compliments my work and asks what my newest creations are. She is always sharing my earrings to others. The best cheerleader to ask for!
