We had the good fortune of connecting with Marilyn Anguiano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marilyn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always loved photography, animals, grooming and over all holistic health care for animals, so I thought why not form it into a business!
I never once saw my work as a job, it’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing since a kid. I remember being 12 years old knocking on people’s doors to ask if I could groom their dog. My friends, family and even neighbors would come to me for help if there was a sick dog, rabbit or a squirrel. They knew I would be the one to nurture it back to life!
Unkept Pups has grown a lot and it’s super flattering that my supporters look up to me and willingly want the best for their pets. One thing about the grooming / pet industry is we are always learning something new and to never belittle anyone for something they are learning about, too.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me aside from others is my understanding of quality VS quantity, wanting your pets to look and feel at their best in the comfort of my home, my holistic approach in pet care , being one on one for your pets spa day, and my professional pet portraits!
There’s all kinds of dogs I deal with, so it’s definitely not a “oh you play with pups all day” kind of job. No one really talks about the insight of pet grooming, It’s not as easy as it looks. There’s always going to be a challenge when it comes to running your own business, only I can achieve it by staying consistent yet keeping my own mental health at state. Being a housewife, 8 pets and running a business from home is a challenge in itself but I’m grateful to have this opportunity in my one life I have. So I will make the most out of it! What I want the world to know about Unkept Pups is to make your pets life count, it’s a short one! Do what you love, make money with it & never settle for less.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spots in the city is the only dog bar in Houston! I love the idea of having a get together for our own sanity and our pets. It’s a great social hangout not only for ourselves, but for our dogs! I can’t stress enough how important it is to socialize your dog to keep them from ending up in shelters.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I give a huge shoutout to my main supporter, my man Jorge Quintanilla. He’s the one who’s helped me leave my 9-5 job to chase my dreams! Thank you babe!
