We had the good fortune of connecting with Marilyn Biles and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marilyn, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Actually, I can’t remember ever wanting to do anything else. I have worked almost everyday all my life. It’s my passion and my work.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a painter. I started by studying fashion illustration in art school. I was never able to work at that. I continued to explore other kinds of artistic expressions. For a while I taught art to young children and encouraged them to expresses themselves. It was never easy but I’ve always continued to work, even during the times I was temporary sidetracked. I learned to just be myself. To be what you are really meant to be. My work tells the story of my life by the it has changed over the years. Those changes are not deliberate, they come about because they are a result of the way I have grown.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would say we have wonderful museums in Houston. And where to eat would depend on the preferences of the guests.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. My experience at Moore was the most enriching and most creatively fulfilling that I ever had. I encourage young people to follow their hearts desires.
