We had the good fortune of connecting with Marilyn Ramirez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marilyn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always enjoyed spending time in the kitchen. Growing up, I would hang out with my mom while she created these amazing meals and the seeds were planted watching her put so much love & care into everything she prepared in her space. No one left my mom’s kitchen hungry.
I would imagine creating a warm & inviting space within my community in which I’d be able to welcome everyone with a fresh baked cookie and a bit of friendly conversation. A place where old friends can hang out, or two people can go on a first date for some conversation, or someone can just sit quietly and enjoy a good book. I’m not quite at that stage yet, but I know it’s something I will achieve.
Being able to create what I want, how I want, is liberating. I can tell my own story in my business. I can offer my community quality scratch-baked desserts to help enhance their celebrations, and I feel honored to be included in their special moments. And the best part? I get to do it all with my best friend and loudest supporter by my side.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started Yellow Apron Baking Co. with a desire to offer classic baked treats to everyone. I want to help make someone’s day a little bit sweeter, maybe a little bit brighter, and what better way than with a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie or a warm scone with some locally made jam? We offer scratch-baked treats made in small batches and always baked fresh to order using our favorite quality ingredients.
Getting to this point required me to take some unexpected turns and learn how to pivot in my business. I’ve done my best to learn something from every situation, planned or unplanned. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that while it’s certainly important to have a plan, you can’t be so tied to it that you refuse to adjust when needed.
We’re just looking to match the high standards we have for our business, our products, and each other. We’re just looking for a way to connect with our community and offer our neighbors a moment of happiness.
Also, I’d like to add that we will be moving locations to Pearland in the upcoming weeks! See you all there!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One place we always bring folks to is La Casita, a local family-owned Tex-Mex restaurant that’s been around since the ’70s. If we’re looking for a chill place with great food, that has to be Dan’s Pizza on Hwy 3 usually followed by Saloon Door Brewing in Webster. If we’re hanging out in the city, we love Hughie’s and Eureka Heights Brewery, in that order. Depending on the time of year, a trip to the Strand in Galveston is a must, hopefully for Dickens on the Strand. And if at all possible, catching a show at White Oak Music Hall has to be on the itinerary.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Without a doubt, I am who I am and have the opportunities I have because of Mom & Dad. They taught us what hard work looks like and what hard work can help you achieve, and basically just how to be a good human. Louis, my boyfriend and greatest hype man, who always believes in me and keeps me laughing. And last but not least, thank you to Chef Bartosh & Chef Bass who instructed our little group of culinary students to follow our dreams.
