Meet Melanie Moye | Chandler

We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Moye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melanie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have been creating candles for 10 years. My love for candles started with my obsession of lighting a candle after a long day of nursing school at PVAMU; trying to wind down and study for the next day. So fast forward to January 2020 I decided to share my passion with a few friends and family members and the feedback was unimaginable. Honestly I was nervous to launch my business during a pandemic, but I knew taking a risk is a necessary step for success, you will either win or lose but will definitely learn from every experience encountered.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is me. I have mastered a special combination of products to produce a highly scented, safe candle. Not only do I offer just candles,I have wax melts for warmers for those who prefer not to have a flame, exfoliating sugar scrubs, and aroma sprays for your home, car, or office space. I am most proud that I went after my dream and created a business of my own. I am excited to see my business grow with all the new and exciting products to be offered. Scented Moment by Mel was created with hard work, dedication, commitment, and faith. Was it Easy? No, nothing worth having is easy. Ive had to balance working on the front line, full time as a Nurse Practitioner, being an entrepreneur, mother, wife, friend, and taking time for self care (might I add my products play a major role in my relaxation). Some lessons that I had to learn is to never stop believing in myself and my vision. Some days everything will go as planned, you know the good days, then other days your trying to figure out how can everything go wrong, those are the days you have to remember your WHY. Why did I start this business? I want the world to know that I create every candle, sugar scrub, wax melt, room spray with a piece of my heart. I love the idea of creating a mood for others, whether its a specific aroma to relax, an item to decorate their living space, a gift to others, or a creation to enhance a celebration, Scented Moments by Mel will be there!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh I’m going to have fun with this question. We will start our mornings active and relaxed with an exercise routine, whether yoga at Discovery Green or a walk in Hermann Park. A facial and massage will be booked at Hotel ZaZa. We are definitely having breakfast at the Breakfast Klub, Franks Grill, or Glazed the doughnut cafe. Lunch and/or Brunch, this is a hard one, but I pick Phil & Derek’s, Taste Bar + Kitchen, Rays BBQ, or Cool Runnings. Dessert right? Craves Cupcake and a sno cone from Red Wagon. We will spend our days roaming the city, third ward, museum district, city centre, shopping at the galleria and thrift stores, supporting a sporting event, and taking the kids to the zoo or a trip to my hometown Galveston, TX. We will have dinner at Ruth Chris, Pappadeaux’s, or Texas de Brazil. Our night life will include hanging out at The Address, Bar 5015, and catching a comedy show at The Improv.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family and friends for always supporting my dream. I would also like to recognize a few of my candle friends and groups, Jaz with Blk Sunflower Co., Keosha with Resilience Lux Candle Co., and the Black Candle Makers Club founded by Jewelz Candlez.
