Meet Melvin Johnson | Chandler

We had the good fortune of connecting with Melvin Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melvin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to start my own business because there was no better time than now. You know, right now the year is 2021 and it is 1000 times easier for me to start a business right now than it was for my parents when they were growing up. So I wanted to create something that I could control and that I can be the determining factor of how big I can grow something. You know they say “when you work for someone, you’re fulfilling someone else’s dream” and that always stuck with me so that’s why I created this to fulfill my own dreams.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What makes me different if I’m leaning into me being a young black male making and hand-pouring Candles. In most cases, you find this is a very female-dominated industry and because of that, I wanted to cater to a market that typically is looked past. Not many brands are leading with, here’s a candle Young Bachelor, to make sure your home feels inviting to your guest. The reviews so far have been amazing but the biggest challenge that I had to overcome this far is just getting the formula right. There’s nothing more dissatisfied when you buy a candle, you light it, and you can’t smell it in your house. The biggest challenge is working months and months and months and making sure that when they light this candle that it fills up the space and they realize why this is a luxury brand! I want everyone to know I thought about them from start to finish. From the packaging to when that candle can no longer be lit, I thought of them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston Texas has to be one of the most underrated cities to visit. Now if you are single coming to Houston for the first time, I would say only come for three days anything more than that is too much LOL! The great thing about Houston is the food so there are a few spots that you must hit before you leave. And no particular order everyone must try Steak 48, Lucille’s, The Turkey Leg Hut, and Pappadeaux‘s. These places have become an institution at this point and it’s somewhere that you have to experience at least once before you leave the city. After that, there’s a host of bars and clubs you must experience but right now Kirby and Chapman on Sundays is a problem followed by Bar 5015. Thank me later!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well, first and foremost that will have to go to my wife Shamika. She’s been there since day one. Not only from the birth of Wix And Vibes but also other endeavors that I try before this. After that any and everyone that knows me because I went to all my friends and family and had them sample different scents, asked their opinions about different vessels, thoughts on the packaging. Everyone in my circle has a part in the success of the company.
