We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Carr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I started my photography career over 30 years ago, everyone said I would not make money as a photographer. It would be a dead end career. I still pursued my passion of art and photography and still pushed on. I did try working in corporate America first. After my wife and I returned from our honeymoon, the company I was working for closed it’s doors. I starting my new life as a married man, with a wife, and needed to formulate a career change so this would never happen again. After months of soul searching, I told my wife I wanted to pursue photography full time and open a studio. I took a risk with $5,000 to purchase my first pro camera: Hasselblad 501CM. The rest is history and I have never looked back.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Photography is a beautiful journey of new places, friendships, and great moments. Our Portrait photography allows us to photograph people in all stages of life. We photograph newborns, children, family, and business executives for their business. Our passion to capture our clients’ stories. Michael Carr Photography’s mission is to visually design and create portrait images that convey the unique characteristics and personal strengths of each person being photographed.
Michael Carr, has a B.S Photography from Sam Houston State University (SHSU). I married my wife, Lisa Carr, 25 years ago. Together we started our studio: Michael Carr Photography. We faced many challenges with our business and always consulted and advised each other on how to get through the challenges. Owning a business is hard! We face many items we have to remain current on the business side. A few examples are evaluating COGS, balance sheets, goal setting, tax paperwork, staying current on HR laws ae just a few. The other creative challenge is to always stay current on what clients are looking for, and also to stay in front of potential clients through constant marketing.
Michael’s attention to detail ranges from proper clothing selection, body language, and posing techniques. His effective use of lighting techniques and his firm understanding of facial analysis are talents that have been acquired through over 25 plus years of portrait photography experience and training.
I am a man of many interests and strive for perfection in everything I put time into. I enjoy photography as a profession but find restoring vintage industrial artifacts my release. I have served my country and now my time is devoted to my wife and our 12 year old daughter, Bella Grace. When I am not creating images, I enjoy time at our ranch on the Gulf coast where I enjoy saltwater fishing and barbequing for friends and family. I am a man of God and walk with Him daily. Happiness to me is leaving a positive footprint wherever life’s journey takes me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Houston and Texas for the week, I would hope they would visit in the early spring time when it’s cooler! Frist, I would take my friend to see the Rodeo and also the BBQ cook off. There is plenty of food and drinking at this event!
Then after a few days experiencing the Rodeo, head to the Texas Gulf Coast and fish! We would catch our fish and grill it up at a dockside restaurant.
Then we would head to the Texas Hill Country to see the hills and greenery in the coutryside. While there, we would visit Cooper’s BBQ in Llano and also Opie’s BBQ in Spicewood, Tx. A nice cold beer at either of these restaurants is always on the menu.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my family for all the support and encouragement over the years. I would also like to thank God, and the many answered prayers. My faith in the Lord has carried me through the highs and the lows of owning my own business.
