We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael McQurren and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, what do you attribute your success to?
It’s too many factors to name but to choose 1 I would say the family/friends who I’ve done events for. They refer me to others which creates more opportunities for me to expand the brand. Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
To be honest this was not in the plan for me, I just so happen to follow my uncle around to different establishments and he let me play around 1 night. Before I knew it there was people dancing everywhere and a couple of hair pieces on the floor (lacefronts) lol. After that night I didn’t think no more of it but my uncle saw something acted on it. Basically creating a brand and helping me find another avenue to help make a name for myself. Now 5 years later here I am getting interviewed by a magazine, getting calls from radio personalities and traveling out of state. They say favor ain’t fair but I’ll take it as long as I’m able to. At the end of the day I’m just a kid from Alief living life and enjoying the ride. I’m nowhere near where I want to be but no worries I’ll get there.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Eating wise Houston has too many spots to name! I’ll name a few. Turkey Leg Hut, Breakfast Klub, Bar 2200, Ray’s BBQ, & French Fry House. Xtreme off road park in Crosby is where its at thank me later. Houston has so many gems its ridiculous we have our own culture which makes visitors/tourists become residents lol. You can’t go wrong with anything you do here.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
1st Shout out goes to my uncle Cary Hunter aka DJ Poppa C!!! It was his vision that started it all he gave me an opportunity to help carry it out and here we are today. I owe it all to him no question. My mentor DJ Coolie C helped me with different techniques to improve my craft. He invited me to his events and the way he moved the crowd was crazy! I had to get in the lab he was my motivation to get better. Special shout out to Stacy Smith and Ms. Joyce White-Bingham for giving me my name lol. Don’t know how they came up with it but I took it and ran with it. Now ppl don’t even call me my government name just Magic Mike lol. Thanks yall!
