We had the good fortune of connecting with Michaela Cink and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michaela, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose this career path because every work day is different. I get to be creative with every client, no head of hair is the same and that’s what brings out my creativity and makes my job fun.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started cosmetology eleven years ago, I would have never thought I would be my own boss today. I started off as a shy hairstylist with very little words and now that I have broken out of my shell I feel like I can conquer the world. It was not easy getting to where I am at today but, I am so thankful for the obstacles that I went through to get here. When I was fresh out of cosmetology school I was absolutely terrified I felt like I had no idea what I was doing. I was determined to find a salon that would teach me techniques and not just throw me out on that floor and I was so blessed to get a job at a continued education salon (TnT salon) they helped guide me in my first 5 years as a hairstylist and I’m so appreciative of that because I got to meet and learn from some incredible stylist along the way!
Fast forward to 2018 that’s when I convinced myself with the help from my husband it was time to go out on my own as an independent stylist and open ( Hair by Magic Mac) . I’m not going to lie I caused some major anxiety to myself thinking a bunch of “what if’s” but it all worked out. Of course running your own business brings some hardships. I had to learn more about taxes, supply cost, scheduling. I went from working at a fully staffed salon to a one woman show. Thankfully as a suite owner I still get the opportunity to work with my fellow stylist down the hallways and even get share my suite with my stylist friends Desi and Dianna. They have brought me comfort and joy and I’m so glad I have them all to turn to when I need some business owner encouragement.
2 years into running my own small business I became a mother to my son Baker and the pandemic started all in the same month, I keep telling myself if I can survive through that I can do anything! That was a rough experience but I thank God I still have my small business and a precious little one that motivates me to be the best that I can be for my family.
One thing my salon will always be is a safe space, I enjoy getting to know my new clients and catching up with old clients. It brings me joy that they feel comfortable including me in their lives. I have met some very special people over these years and now I can’t imagine my life without them. I hope to meet many more of you.
There is a quote I read right before I went out on my own and I still live by it to this day. “Build your own dream or someone else will hire you to build theirs”
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had to chose an exciting place to go that’s close to home it would have to be Minute Maid park! The Houston Astros have my heart and I always enjoy watching them play!
Now that I’m a mom, I get to do all the fun little kid activities around the area like sports, indoor playgrounds, museums and swimming!
I enjoy eating at Mamaritas and Lupe Tortillas. You can’t go wrong with fajitas, queso and margs! I could not live without my tex-mex.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am at today without my family’s love and support. I know that’s always cliche to say but it’s true each and everyone of them have played a special part in helping get here and they continue to do so.
When I started my hairstylist journey at TnT I had to start at the very bottom and be an assistant to many of the top stylist there but I always got stuck with Fred (Saldana) that man would put me to WORK! I would go home crying but I honestly learned so much from him taking me under his wing and teaching me his ways through the hair world. I’m so appreciative of it to this very day. When he went on to start his own business I never thought I would be crying that I wasn’t assisting him lol! So I would like to say thank you Fred I will always appreciate you and
I still use some of your hair cut techniques.
Lastly shout out to Sola Salons for opening and allowing me to experience this independent stylist life. Sola Salons has provided not only me but my fellow stylist a place to be our own bosses and I enjoy getting to do that with them it’s pretty awesome!
