We had the good fortune of connecting with Miss Kat Moon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miss Kat, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
It’s amazing how one question can be quite impactful and will pause you in your steps to truly reflect for a moment. Lol.
Honestly the most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make and still make on a daily is to NEVER GIVE UP!
Yes, that right there at times for many I have spoken with is one of the most difficult decisions to make in moments of life when you are and MUST be your biggest cheerleader. Especially when you have made a self-executive decision to go all in to pursue your passion(s) or business ventures full force and not looking back or questioning “Should I have done this?”.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Super blessed and excited to have had the opportunity to join and become a co-owner with two amazing ladies of an event venue, The Event Place, known as a “hidden gem”, located on the corner of North Main and James Street in one of Houston’s up and coming Northside neighborhoods!
One of the things that I love and truly believe sets us apart is our attention to detail and the level of service our team strives to give our clients before, during and after the event which is recognized by our clients and their guests who have enjoyed attending a special celebration or even a corporate event as well as vendors who have complimented how communicating with our team and working in our venue was with ease.
So, Kat could you share how you got to where you are today business-wise and how you overcame any challenges that might have surfaced?
Well, if anyone had told me twenty-five plus years ago the winding path my training and career would take me throughout the years… I’d be floored and questionable!
From not moving to New York as planned to attend and major in fashion design with a minor in the theatre arts to then switching over to attend and later graduating from culinary school while paying tuition as a working artist (with the occasional waiting tables of course. Lol) to later becoming an established multinational hospitality company’s first Chef & Beverage Director in Houston while somehow in the mix work as a country DJ for some years would then lead to falling in love with coffee and intriguing me to dive in and work my way up to becoming a General Manager & Concept Designer at one of the beloved Montrose coffeehouses to once again return to art and acting with the opportunity to perform on stage and in film.
To suddenly have life throw quite a few large curve balls that would place a complete pause on everything… Which would lead me to take a position at one of Houston’s top high-end full-service catering companies where I had to start from the bottom of the totem pole that forced me to grow, stretch and persevere, both professionally and personally to later excelling and becoming one the companies top Account Executives.
Wow… What did you learn through all of this and what would you like the world to know about you and your brand?
One thing is for sure who would have known that those large curve balls would have knocked me into the last piece of the puzzle required to REALIZE what the trajectory of the next twenty plus years would be! Also, by taking the biggest leap of faith in my LIFE and fully diving and embracing entrepreneurship head on as a full-time business co-owner of an amazing venue would give me the courage to finally build up my corporation, KAM Collaborative Concepts, and spark the passion and courage to pursue creative and branding outlets with confidence once again!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Eek… ok we all know this is a tough one given Houston is a melting pot of deliciousness and a metropolis of “things to do” when it comes to the amazing selections and options to choose from!
On the culinary aspect this would be a nice foodie day with an out-of-town bestie.
Would have to say at this point in time I would take them to Dough Zone which recently opened close in the Mid-Town area to enjoy fresh soup dumplings and their Zha Jiang Mian Noodles.
BUT first we would have to go to my buddy, Kevin Dowd’s shop, The Original Kolache Shoppe to enjoy authentic & traditional Czech pastries along with a cup of Zeppelin artisan roasted coffee!
Skipping ahead for dinner you cannot go wrong with Traveler’s Table located on Westheimer near the Montrose area. If you’ve been there, you already know! Highly recommend seating in the bar seating area for a more socializing mood. Great for creative business meet ups!
Then to end the night with a Speakeasy vibe, definitely heading over to The Ready Room located in the Heights for a more chill lounge and relaxing wind down. On some nights you might be lucky to catch live rhythmical jazz & blues musicians or a vocalist performing.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Most definitely would like to give a shoutout to my close family, friends and industry colleagues who are constantly showing impeccable & unwavering support throughout this crazy-fun journey!
Also, to my fellow co-owners at The Event Place (in Houston) for the opportunity to join in such an amazing & creative venture and to the entire TEP in-house team for believing that our “hidden gem” is an incredible venue to create memorable memories and spectacular moments!
Plus, I CAN NOT forget the “Miss Kat Moon” crew who are going over and beyond by supporting, promoting, sharing my content and truly believe in the re-vamping of the brand that will be expanding even more throughout the remainder of the 2024 year and years to come!
