We had the good fortune of connecting with MistaGoodBar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi MistaGoodBar, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m a proud native son of Newark, NJ. I was raised in a home with a large family, and it was my uncle who sparked my love of music. He was a neighborhood DJ who threw parties in my grandparents basement, and I’d also watch him practice his art on his own time, and the sounds he played transformed me, and still have a hold of me all of these decades later! Loving and sharing music is something I’ve done from a young age, and to be able to have a larger platform to continue to do that, and also knowing people trust me with their time and their ears motivates me daily.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Favor and grace play a large part in the creation of the entertainment entity of MistaGoodBar. I have hosted events, shows, concerts and festivals in and around the city of Houston since 2004. I was invited by DJ Burb and DJ Nimbus to be the official host of PAID IN FULL, the long running hip hop house party that outgrew the house. Becoming part of this flagship event opened opportunities to host music festivals, various music events and functions, weddings, as well as hosting concerts at well known venues around the city, introducing to the stage artists such as Sy Smith, The Foreign Exchange, Bun B and many, many more. My hosting abilities and natural love of music afforded me the opportunity to host a soul music podcast as part of the Soulfood Podcast trio, as well as create and produce THE REMEDY, which quickly became the go-to for new and local artists to share their art, as well as being a home for music that terrestrial radio often overlooked. It’s this ability to share a variety of sounds that sets THE REMEDY apart from what listeners get on traditional FM radio. While the process was not easy, it also did not feel difficult, as this feels as if it has always been my purpose, and I love what I have been blessed to do. Remembering the blessing of this opportunity has allowed me to overcome any challenges presented.

The main lesson I’ve learned is how far integrity and humility will propel you in your purpose. I take pride in being able to be a reliable, consistent part of the Houston music community, and that the integrity I have allows my name to be mentioned favorably in rooms that I have yet to step in. I have earned the respect not only of my peers, but also those that proceeded me and have laid a path that makes it a bit easier for me and others to walk on.

Fun fact: This ENTIRE part of my life (the hosting, the radio program, the podcast) all began with me suffering a broken foot!

Long story short, I attended a house party on crutches, and because I couldn’t dance, I sat by the dj all night (DJ Burb) and hyped the crowd on the microphone. Everything started after that night!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of the entertainment spots I’d take them to would be Exposure, a house music experience created/curated by DJ Nimbus, I’d also take them to see live music with Marium Echo, or to see Mr. Phill Wade’s showcase, or visit DJ SoulOne spinning tunes at BB Lemon, or check out DJ Flash Gordon Parks spinning tunes at Motown on Mondays. As far as eating and drinking, I’d definitely suggest Mo Better Brews for fine vegetarian/vegan cuisine, or visit Houston’s most popular restaurant Turkey Leg Hut, and then venture to Bar 5015 for a nice cocktail and atmosphere. I’d also make sure to visit POST Downtown, and then visit 8th Street Brewery for craft beers and laid back atmosphere. Of course the 3rd Row Houses for a variety of art and marketplace options, as well as visiting RISE rooftop for some amazing performances and atmosphere.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shout out is for the PAID IN FULL crew out of Houston, as well as QUANTUM LEAP RADIO. Both entities play a huge part in the development of who I am as a participant in the music community for the city of Houston and beyond. I have been the host for PAID IN FULL, Houston’s longest running classic hip hop house party for over a decade. Also QUANTUM LEAP RADIO provided me a platform to create THE REMEDY on KPFT 90.1 FM.
