We had the good fortune of connecting with Trenton Kirksey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trenton, why did you pursue a creative career?
Music chose me. Since before I can remember, I’ve been writing, arranging & conducting music. As soon as I joined a choir, I learned that I could sing and soon after began to compete, successfully. I joined the band my sixth grade year and would remain musically active, even until today. It’s part of my being, the necessity to start, continue, complete the next music project. Even when I wake up in the morning, I sing. Once I hear the product I love, it’s like having a child. You are proud & sensitive. But it feels great, it feels right. So, I guess that’s why I do this, it feels right.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a Composer, I get to decide what’s heard in the music. I write lyrics, melodies and harmonies to communicate feelings, moods & messages.
As a Producer, I determine what musical instruments, voices & musical technology is appropriate to achieve the musical message developed during composition.
As an Artist, I get to deliver or perform the musical message. Either by conducting the musicians in the ensemble or by singing, too.
My passion for each project rests in excellent delivery. I’m certain I’ve done what I intended to, when I reach that standard.
I chose Nikki Ross for my first single because she is a Premier Vocalist and has the experience to accomplish the very diverse musical approach I wanted to take in “A Beautiful Day”, Nikki very excellently achieves every phrase with clean control and careful curing.
During our time working in the studio, she didn’t have to imagine what life would be like “walking by faith”, because Nikki is currently experiencing a temporary blindness. We believe God for her total healing and we ask the city and anyone who will, join us in believing God. Nikki will see “A Beautiful Day” again!
I shared that because its important for you to understand that, in life, moments can either take you down or take you up. Even low moments can be a launching place for high ones; believe God, tomorrow will be BETTER than Today. That’s faith, that’s the Beauty of the Day.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite places in Houston are THEE PLACES.
For starters, you’ll need to stop by The Breakfast Klub, the flavors in the food will fuel you up something happy, you’ll be ready for a day of touring… Or, maybe a nap will be in order.
At lunchtime, I’d suggest you keep it light… stop by Sauce Pit (my favorite Vegan Foodtruck) for some Vegan BBQ! – The Sausage Sandwich is my favorite.
For dinner, a reservation at Lucille’s is appropriate! Take in the ambience indoors or the vibes outdoors. It’s all everything. The food, the drinks… Take an uber, stay a while and enjoy. – Check instagram for the Live Music Schedule.
For Dessert, I’m headed to Voodoo Donuts in the Heights (Pro-Tip, THEY DONT CLOSE)
For Brunch, you ask? I’m back at Lucille’s! on the Patio & I might hop up and perform with the band. 🤘🏾
Oh, I’m ordering OXTAILS & GRITS.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As a child, I knew that Music was my calling. That Artistry was in my soul. But as I came into contact with certain souls along the way, it was clear that God intended for me to receive a contribution. Thank you to my Mom, Grandmother & Family as a whole. Thanks to my Music Teachers from 5th Grade to University! I hold dear in my heart, My Pastor & Church Family, Pastor Ralph Douglas West & The Church Without Walls. God has carefully crafted the world I live in and I’m grateful for everyone who makes positive contributions to my existence!
