We had the good fortune of connecting with Misty Campbell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Misty, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always said that if I would’ve gotten paid for each time someone complimented or highly praised my fashion sense, I would be a millionaire by now, lol. As I’ve gotten older and my kids have started to come into their teen years, I begin to regret that I had not taken advantage of my talent which could’ve led to additional income and perhaps benefit my kids in some way. Furthermore, with the rise of social media, I begin to see others gain opportunities from their styling talents regardless of having any specific credentials that I thought might have been required. With that I decided to take a chance on myself, you know, better late than never. I also wanted to not only tell my kids you can be anything you want to be, but I wanted to show them through how I live. My kids have been my biggest supporters and motivators and it is for them that I continue to pursue the life that entrepreneurship can provide.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a fashion and wardrobe stylist, the looks I create are inspired by the many facets of women that make us beautiful, strong, courageous and celestial. I differentiate myself by diversifying my portfolio to include looks that cater to everyday women that lead exceptional lives. I’m especially proud of the leap of faith I took to start my own business during one of the lowest points in my life and having the ability to use it as a point of focus to bring me through to the high I’m on today. After taking the necessary legal steps to get my business incorporated, I utilized my sales background to socialize my brand through social media to gain attention, build interest and drive actual business. It has not been the easiest journey as technology within and around social media platforms are always innovating and changing. Keeping up with the newest editing tools, the next best filter, or tools to enhance how you engage these platforms can be quite the challenge. I’ve relied heavily on YouTube and social media gurus who are always up-to-date on the latest social media marketing tools and willing to educate others. Along my entrepreneurial journey, I have learned how to place value on my work and build a demand. I’ve learned not to compare myself to others but to be true and trust my own creative instinct. What I would share with the community about my brand is that 3012 Fashion Ave is not only where the runway meets real life, but becomes the place where fashion no longer camouflages or segregates our differences but reflects a style that comes with unity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many beautiful places to visit in the city of Houston and one of the reasons that quite often visitors are converted to forever residents. As a stylist, it would only be natural that my best friend and I start with a shopping trip at the Houston Galleria. The Galleria area of Houston is home to some of the best upscale shopping stores and boutiques and boast some of the best Seafood and Steakhouse’s. Steak 48 is one of my favorites and where we’d dine after a long day of shopping. As a huge fan of art, we would later in the week venture to the Houston Museum of Fine Art, The Houston museum of natural science and the Houston Zoo. I would also make sure that we visit the theater district and catch a great play or symphony performance. Houston’s downtown Theater District spans 17 blocks and is located in the heart of downtown Houston. This cultural arts district features nine world renowned performing arts companies that feature a unique blend of cutting-edge performing arts and well-known classics in a variety of intimate settings. Since we would be in the area of the theater district, we’d definitely take advantage of visiting the Downtown aquarium and then eat at the Hard Rock Cafe afterwards. Now, no weeklong itinerary would be complete without a good Saturday brunch of which we would indulge at the famous Breakfast club located downtown. Sunday would be the perfect time to end our week with a relaxing day at a luxury spa. One of my favorites is called Milk and Honey located in River Oaks.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow, there are so many people that have played an integral part in the success I have today. Whether each contribution gave me a step or catapulted me, they all have only moved me forward throughout my journey. I have to start by shouting out my two teenagers, Dynisty and Daylen. They have been the driving force behind my motivation to succeed and have been my biggest cheerleaders. I have to shout out my first financial investor and friend, Priscilla Barnes, who is also a successful business owner in the fashion/fitness world and was the first person to say that she believed in me. I have to shout out my sister, Crystal Campbell who is also an entrepreneur and my grounding support. She has been the one I can bounce ideas off of and hold me accountable to see my projects through to full execution. A big shout out to my very first client, Paola Kustra, Founder and CEO of Bag Romance. Paola trusted my creativity, to style looks as a brand ambassador for her brand and allowing me a platform to expose my talent to a wider audience. I have to shout out my re-occurring client, Dorian Marie. Dorian trusted me to bring her vision for her book and album cover to life, making me a published stylist. She has become one of my dearest of friends whose book inspired me to finish what I start regardless of life’s trials. Finally, I have to shout out my lord and savior, Jesus Christ, whose love for me has shown me that my life is full of purpose.
