We had the good fortune of connecting with Mizz Weirdwide and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mizz, why did you pursue a creative career?
As a creative spirit, I cannot function without some form of creativity going on in my life. Music has been the source of happiness for me as far back as I can remember. Knowing the music can evoke emotions affords me an outlet to express my thoughts and feelings, while allowing others to feel and ponder things they may be experiencing as well. It feels less lonely when you think of things solo creative spaces as ways to connect with others.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
OPAKE was formed back in February 2024. We have all been in other bands but this one is quite different. When we connected, by pure happenstance, the cohesiveness just clicked into place. We are a progressive rock band, female-fronted. If you were to think of a person in a psych ward, telling stories of their multiple traumas and personalities in the form of songs that make you start a circle pit, that’s a picture of us. We begin our first tour in April of 2025 on the west coast.

A bit about the band: Judson was the most recent addition, bringing a 6-string to the mix, has been an asset. He offers music lessons, masters and mixes for his clients, and is the expert of anything musically engineered. Alex, our percussionist, is in a few bands and is known for his long drives to practice and also his long locks of hair. Danny, the metalhead bass player in the mix, comes from South America. He is quiet, thoughtful, talented, and loves his Vans shoes. Chris is our 7-string rhythm guitarist and songwriter. He is the glue that holds the band in a productive space, the driving force. Mizz, our vocalist and lyricist is the reason the songs make you feel like you are watching a horror movie. Her lifetime of unaddressed traumas have culminated into a musical blessings box for the masses.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Smithers Park is probably the most inspiring place. It’s an artistic outdoors space where you can free your mind, take photos, think, be alone or with others and it’s not too far from every part of the compass within Houston.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This is a shoutout to all of those who feel something on the inside that they cannot be, express, or share on the outside. You are not alone. We all have our own internalizations that bring us pain, joy, remorse, anger, and other emotions. Being forced to suppress due to lack of support or the idea that you would not be accepted by others for those thoughts, it’s a lonely place. We are here for YOU!
