We had the good fortune of connecting with Mohammed Numan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mohammed, why did you pursue a creative career?
i have a love/hate relationship with this question. i feel like on one hand, i’ve always felt this ache within myself that could only be relieved from creating things, i think that’s where it begins for a lot of people. the hard part is focusing all that passion and angst into something that is lucrative. which is the hate side of that relationship for me, because creating is such a stream of consciousness thing for me that having to pack my art into a nice little commodifiable package is difficult and frustrating at times.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
let me just start off by saying being an independent artist is not easy, especially doing it all DIY, but i think i’m okay with that. and i always have been. i’ve known for a long time that i’m gonna have to see this thing thru and it’s not always gonna be easy and in fact more often than not, it won’t be. that’s something you have to accept and even welcome if you’re gonna embark on a creative path. i think i got to where i am by taking up new things and finding comfort in not being good at them right away, that opens up this opportunity for you to watch yourself learn in real time. and before you know it you’re a lot further along than you were a couple days ago. it gave me a new perspective on learning just about any skill and what it takes to become at least somewhat good at it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
oof. this is embarrassing because i live in the suburbs, but i will do my best. i love taking my friends/visitors to agora off of westheimer. it’s a beautiful greek style coffee shop and there’s a bunch of thrift stores down the street. makes for a good day to get some coffee, walk, and maybe buy some clothes. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
i just want to shoutout any and everybody who has even taken the time to listen and consume something i’ve created. i would also like to shoutout some of my very talented artist friends, Hayes Howard, Shon Plant, and Cooper Ritz.
