Meet Monica Kang | Creative Director in TAB N SHIFT

We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Kang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monica, what are you inspired by?
Inspired by the story of Ugly Duckling for our brand story

Ellen, Jenny and Monica, we are the main team members in our brand. We are sisters, raised by a single mom, the Korean-American immigrants. We all have background in Fashion, worked long time at 7th Ave in New York as designer, production coordinator.

Tab and shift is part of our own daily story reflecting our identities.

Ellen, the designer, my big sister wanted to make a daily eco-bag that reflects her own boyish , effortless style yet luxurious main carryall to showcase her style every way in any multi -occasions.

It was hard to find the luxurious feel sporty bag that has Haute Couture ( sorry for my own term🙄) feel in it.

She didn’t want to give up the attributes of paper-like tyvek material( which is known for DuPont paper usually found in the construction sites) but had to solve the durability problem to utilizing as a large fashionable carryall.
Her long time career experiences and relationship as a sourcing R&D agents pays off to solve the application of the utilize of material.

She tried many prototypes working with textile industry experts in Deagu, South Korea and finally launched her own line. Jenny, graphic designer who is a mom of two and myself, monica also mother of two joined at that time. She was constantly seeking the answer to utilize the tyvek material for its use of aesthetics on colors and soft feel, to achieve the high quality within the merit of less waste always minded in the product.

She recalls, “Millie bag looks like me. In the tale of Ugly Duckling story, that very duck is like my first tote , millie bag. Undiscovered value finally was found by the one who see the worthy of its own true color and identity.

Ugly Duckling thought he has lived his whole life with a derivative.
He was bullied by peers for his different appearances and had to fight for his life to lift up his feeling of inferiority. He finds his true identity later and lives happily ever after. He was indeed a beautiful SWAN, not a duck.

TAB N SHIFT was created, inspired by this story. We are the Fashion Brand that seeking out our true meaning of life journey together.

Our founders as sisters want to share our value together with the similar-minded people who keep our identity with confidence. Change is inevitable sometimes yet that doesn’t mean to lose yourself.

We are just flexible to go our journey TOGETHER. We were unknown to all once, seemed useless and misunderstood until we discovered our originality and true identity.

We are the sustainable brand. When you are made the image of the Creator, you are so worthy and nothing to be wasted. I think the life is to know all about our true identity. Remember who you are, why you are made of, all things were beautifully, wonderfully and fearfully made to impact each other under the loving Creator. That feels like the true blessing. Our bag is , we call it, “premium “used by reusable material to create anything we want to express ourselves. Our daily life with all these technologies are abundant but we want to maintain the basic resources.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
SoCo, Enchanted Rock, Domain for shopping, Hamilton pool ( Cave )
