We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Mehalshick, LCSW and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most significant factor behind success of the company has been learning to trust my decisions and following through. As a business owner, you are your own critic – as well as identifying some of the challenges and decisions that will either be a success or failure. I have learned as a business owner to find my voice, speak my truth and own what my strengths are. Sometimes you have to focus on what’s best for your business and those that you serve.
What should our readers know about your business?
The Nourished Nest Therapy & Consulting was a concept created after almost 18 years of being a therapist working for many non-profit organizations and agencies. After many years, I realized that I had “outgrown” the industry and wanted to create an organization that not only was approachable and honest, but truly embodies the concept of good therapy. Throughout the last several years, I have been able to provide good therapy to clients that I have the privilege of working with, however, within the last two years, and with the impact of COVID-19, there was a need to serve the Houston community which has been struggling with access to good quality mental health services. I wanted to create a practice where we accept insurance, where clients are matched with a therapist who can assist and support them, as well as the experience of receiving quality service and not sitting on a waiting list or not returning a phone call. Some of the challenges that I have faced are learning the 101’s of business, however, throughout mentorships, support and identifying the needs of the community, we are currently serving Texas, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Virginia virtually and providing services to children, adolescents and adults within the community. We also are offering “walk and talk” therapy, where clients are able to meet with their therapist in a safe confidential space, but outside of the virtual world.
What I want the world to know about the Nourished Nest Therapy & Consulting is that we are a therapy practice that allows you to be yourself and receive good therapy. We are friendly, authentic and our mission and values are reflected in the services that we provide.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Not being a Houston native, I think that this is a tough question. When I’ve had friends in town, one of the biggest recommendations is that we can eat Mexican 5 days a week! I would definitely say, visiting Austin, TX and also running or walking along the Buffalo Bayou is a great place. I think that going downtown and seeing an Astros game would be an experience, specifically on Friday where there’s fireworks. I love Houston and it’s honestly become home, but there’s always a new restaurant and experience.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly, this question is easy – I have been privileged to work with my Nourished Nest Consulting staff who truly are some of the most honest, authentic and compassionate therapists. I am very grateful for my business and industry mentors as well as family and friends who have supported me throughout the journey. Most importantly however, my faith in God has really empowered me to see my strengths and given me opportunities throughout my career that I would have never experienced.e
